## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Miles (mi) 1, Step length 2.5 ft): 1 miles = 2,112 steps.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| value | Miles (mi) | The amount in miles. |
| step | Step length | Heel to heel. |
| result | Steps | The same amount in steps. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| value | Miles (mi) | The amount in miles. |
| step | Step length | Heel to heel. |
| result | Steps | The amount in steps. |

## Method

steps = miles × 5,280 ft ÷ step length

## Assumptions

- Exact on the typed decimals: at most 6 decimal places (6 significant digits below 0.0001), rounded half up.

## Worked examples

1. value = 1, step = 0.762 gives result = 2,112. Source: NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B.8: 1 mile = 1,609.344 m.
2. value = 3, step = 0.6096 gives result = 7,920. Source: NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B.8: 1 mile = 1,609.344 m.

## FAQ

### How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,112 with a 2.5 ft step, because a mile is 5,280 ft and 5,280 ÷ 2.5 = 2,112. With a 2 ft step it is 2,640, and with a 3 ft step 1,760.

### How do I measure my step length?

Walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance from where you started, and divide by 10. Measure heel to heel, at your usual pace.

### How do I convert miles to steps?

Multiply the miles by 5,280 to get feet, then divide by your step length in feet. 3 miles at a 2 ft step is 3 × 5,280 ÷ 2 = 7,920 steps.

### How many miles is 10,000 steps?

About 4.73 miles with a 2.5 ft step: 10,000 × 2.5 ÷ 5,280. The steps to miles converter does it the other way.

### Why is a step different from a stride?

A step is one foot to the other foot. A stride is two steps, from one foot back to the same foot. This calculator uses step length.
