## Method

Find the first date of Ramadan on or after the start date, then count the days from the start date to it.

## Assumptions

- Ramadan starts on 1 Ramadan, the first day of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar (here the Umm al-Qura calendar). Islamic days begin at sunset, so the first night prayers are on the evening before.
- Where the month starts when the new crescent is seen, the day observed can be a day later, or rarely earlier.
- Start dates from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2076 work, because the published Umm al-Qura table used here runs from 1420 AH (1999) to 1500 AH (2077).
- The start date itself is not counted: from the day before, the count is 1; on the day itself, it is 0.
- Dates are calendar days with no time of day, so a time zone or a daylight-saving change never adds or loses a day.
