## Method

deadline = start date ± the number of days, counting calendar days or only business days (not Saturday, Sunday, or a US federal holiday); a calendar-day deadline on a non-business day moves to the next business day

## Assumptions

- The start date is day 0 and is not counted: 1 day after Monday is Tuesday.
- Business days are Monday to Friday, less the US federal holidays of 5 U.S.C. 6103 on their observed day (Saturday holidays on the Friday before, Sunday holidays on the Monday after) when holidays are skipped.
- Court rules, state holidays, and extra days off by executive order are not applied.
- The start date is today unless you change it; the page reads today’s date from your device when it loads.

## FAQ

### How do I work out a deadline from a number of days?

Do not count the start date: day 1 is the day after it. Count forward the number of days, and the last day counted is the deadline. 30 calendar days after September 30, 2026 is October 30, 2026.

### What is the difference between calendar days and business days?

Calendar days are every day of the week. Business days are Monday to Friday, less US federal holidays. 10 business days after Friday, December 18, 2026 skip two weekends, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and land on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, 18 calendar days later.

### What if the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday?

With “Move off weekends and holidays” on, a calendar-day deadline on a Saturday, a Sunday or a federal holiday moves to the next business day. Many rules work this way; for example the federal tax code (IRC 7503) moves a last day on a weekend or legal holiday to the next day that is not one.

### Can I count back from a date?

Yes. Pick “Before” to find a deadline before the start date, such as the last day to file 14 days before a hearing. A deadline counted back that falls on a weekend or holiday moves to the business day before it.

### Does this follow court rules?

No. Court deadlines follow the court’s own rules on which days count, what happens when the clerk’s office is closed, and extra days for mailing. Use this page for a first estimate, and check a legal deadline against the rule that sets it.

### Which holidays are skipped?

The US federal holidays on their observed days: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. State holidays are not skipped.
