## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Your time zone New York (US Eastern), Trading day October 19, 2026) on the example date Monday, October 19, 2026: On Monday, October 19, 2026, in New York (US Eastern) time, the London and New York sessions overlap Mon, Oct 19, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

| --- | --- | --- |
| zone | Your time zone | The time zone to show the sessions in (IANA name). |

| overlapLength | Overlap length | How long the London and New York sessions are both open. |

| closes | Week closes | Friday at 5:00 PM New York time, after the trading day, in your time zone. |

## Method

For the trading day, find the moment (UTC) each session opens and closes in its own city’s local time, and the week’s open and close at 5:00 PM New York time, then show each moment on your time zone’s clock, from the browser’s IANA time zone data.

## Assumptions

- Sessions, each in its own city’s local time on the trading day: Sydney 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Australia/Sydney), Tokyo 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (Asia/Tokyo), London 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Europe/London: GMT in winter, BST in summer), New York 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (America/New_York). These are the local business hours commonly published for the forex sessions (Fortrade); the forex market has no exchange with an official opening bell.
- The week opens on the Sunday before the trading day and closes on the Friday after it (the trading day itself when it is a Friday), both at 5:00 PM New York time. A Sydney session that starts before 5:00 PM New York time on a Sunday is shown as it is; brokers start the week at their own times.
- The trading day is the date you pick when it is a Monday to Friday; a Saturday or Sunday shows the Monday after.
- Each time is shown on your time zone’s clock as “Mon, Oct 19, 8:00 AM”; a session shows “to 5:00 PM” when it ends on the same date in your time zone, and the end date too when it does not. The London and New York overlap runs from the later opening to the earlier closing, and its length is in hours and minutes (“4 hours”).
- Offsets and daylight saving come from the browser’s IANA time zone data (tzdata 2026a when this page was checked), so a rule change arrives with a browser update. Dates from 2000 to 2040 work.

## FAQ

### What are the forex market hours?

The forex market trades around the clock on weekdays: from 5:00 PM New York time on Sunday to 5:00 PM New York time on Friday. Within that week, trading is usually described in four sessions named for the cities where it is busiest, each during local business hours: Sydney 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Tokyo 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, London 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and New York 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

### When do the London and New York sessions overlap?

From 8:00 AM New York time, when New York opens, to 5:00 PM London time, when London closes. For most of the year London is 5 hours ahead, so the overlap is 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM in New York, 4 hours. Since 2007, only one of the two countries has changed its clocks between the second and the last Sundays in March. The same is true between the last Sunday in October and the first Sunday in November. In those weeks London is 4 hours ahead, and the overlap is 5 hours, to 1:00 PM. From 2000 to 2006, the US changed its clocks on the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October. So in the week from the last Sunday in March, London was 6 hours ahead, and the overlap was 3 hours, to 11:00 AM.

### What time does the forex market open on Sunday?

5:00 PM New York time, shown on this page as “Week opens” in your time zone. That is 10:00 PM in London for most of the year, and 9:00 PM in the weeks when London is only 4 hours ahead of New York. In the 2000 to 2006 weeks when London was 6 hours ahead, it was 11:00 PM. In Sydney it is 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 AM on Monday, depending on daylight saving in both cities.

### Is the forex market open on weekends?

No. It closes at 5:00 PM New York time on Friday and opens again at 5:00 PM New York time on Sunday. That is 48 hours later, or 47 or 49 hours when New York changes its clocks that weekend. Pick a Saturday or Sunday and the page shows the sessions of the Monday after.

### Why do the session times move during the year?

Daylight saving. Since 2007, New York moves its clocks on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November; from 2000 to 2006 it used the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October. London moves its clocks on the last Sundays in March and October. Since 2008, Sydney moves its clocks on the first Sundays in October and April. Before that it used the last Sundays in October and March, with two exceptions: it moved its clocks ahead on August 27, 2000 and back on April 2, 2006. Tokyo has no daylight saving. The page reads each city’s rules from your browser’s time zone data, so the times are right for the date you pick.

### What time is the Tokyo session in New York?

9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Tokyo time is 7:00 PM to 4:00 AM New York time while New York is on standard time, and 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM while it is on daylight saving time, both starting the evening before.

### Are these official trading hours?

No. Currencies trade between banks and brokers around the world, with no central exchange and no opening bell. The sessions are the local business hours commonly published for each city, and your broker’s platform sets its own hours and holiday closures.
