## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Grade 1 92%, Weight 1 20, Grade 2 85%, Weight 2 20, Grade 3 78%, Weight 3 25, Weight 4 35, Grade you want 85%): Your grade so far is 84.46% (B).

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| grade1 | Grade 1 | The grade on assignment or category 1, in percent. Leave it empty for work not graded yet. |
| weight1 | Weight 1 | How much assignment or category 1 counts: a percent of the course, or its points possible. |
| grade2 | Grade 2 | The grade on assignment or category 2, in percent. Leave it empty for work not graded yet. |
| weight2 | Weight 2 | How much assignment or category 2 counts: a percent of the course, or its points possible. |
| grade3 | Grade 3 | The grade on assignment or category 3, in percent. Leave it empty for work not graded yet. |
| weight3 | Weight 3 | How much assignment or category 3 counts: a percent of the course, or its points possible. |
| grade4 | Grade 4 | The grade on assignment or category 4, in percent. Leave it empty for work not graded yet. |
| weight4 | Weight 4 | How much assignment or category 4 counts: a percent of the course, or its points possible. |
| grade5 | Grade 5 | The grade on assignment or category 5, in percent. Leave it empty for work not graded yet. |
| weight5 | Weight 5 | How much assignment or category 5 counts: a percent of the course, or its points possible. |
| grade6 | Grade 6 | The grade on assignment or category 6, in percent. Leave it empty for work not graded yet. |
| weight6 | Weight 6 | How much assignment or category 6 counts: a percent of the course, or its points possible. |
| target | Grade you want | The course grade you want, in percent, to find the grade needed on the work not graded yet. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| grade | Your grade so far | The weighted average of the graded rows: the sum of grade × weight divided by the sum of weights. |
| letter | Letter grade | The letter for the grade so far on the Tompkins Cortland Community College scale. |
| needed | Grade needed on the rest | The average grade needed on the rows with a weight and no grade to finish the course at the grade you want. |
| note | Note | Whether the grade needed is above 100% or already secured. |
| graded | Weight graded | The sum of the weights of the rows with a grade. |
| remaining | Weight still to come | The sum of the weights of the rows with no grade yet. |

## Method

grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) over the graded rows; needed = (target × (graded weight + remaining weight) − Σ(grade × weight)) ÷ remaining weight.

## Assumptions

- Weights are relative: percents of the course or points possible give the same average, and they do not need to add up to 100.
- A row with a weight and no grade is work not graded yet; its weight is the weight still to come.
- Letter grades follow the Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY) scale: A 93 and up, A- 90 to below 93, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D+ 67, D 63, D- 60, F below 60.
- Grades above 100% (extra credit) are allowed and count as an A.

1. grade1 = 92%, weight1 = 20, grade2 = 85%, weight2 = 20, grade3 = 78%, weight3 = 25, weight4 = 35, target = 85% gives grade = 84.461538%, letter = B, needed = 86%, graded = 65, remaining = 35. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 5,490 ÷ 65 = 84.46%; (85 × 100 − 5,490) ÷ 35 = 86%.
2. grade1 = 90%, weight1 = 50, grade2 = 72%, weight2 = 100 gives grade = 78%, letter = C+, graded = 150. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: (90 × 50 + 72 × 100) ÷ 150 = 78%.
3. grade1 = 70%, weight1 = 60, weight2 = 40, target = 90% gives grade = 70%, letter = C-, needed = 120%, note = Above 100%: the grade you want needs extra credit., remaining = 40. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: (90 × 100 − 70 × 60) ÷ 40 = 120%.
4. grade1 = 96%, weight1 = 80, weight2 = 20, target = 70% gives grade = 96%, letter = A, needed = -34%, note = Already secured: even 0% on the rest keeps the grade you want.. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: (70 × 100 − 96 × 80) ÷ 20 = −34%.
5. grade1 = 92.99%, weight1 = 1 gives grade = 92.99%, letter = A-. Source: Tompkins Cortland Community College grading scale: A is 93 to 100, A- is 90 to 92.

## FAQ

### How do I calculate my grade in a class?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights. With homework 92% worth 20%, quizzes 85% worth 20%, and a midterm 78% worth 25%: (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25) ÷ (20 + 20 + 25) = 5,490 ÷ 65 = 84.46%.

### Do the weights have to add up to 100?

No. The average divides by the sum of the weights you entered, so weights of 20, 20, and 25 work the same as 4, 4, and 5. That is also why the grade so far only counts work that has a grade: work not graded yet does not pull the average down.

### Can I use points instead of percent weights?

Yes. Enter the percent you scored as the grade and the points the assignment was worth as the weight. A 50-point quiz at 90% and a 100-point test at 72% give (90 × 50 + 72 × 100) ÷ 150 = 78%, the same as 117 points out of 150.

### How do I find the grade I need on the final exam?

Enter the final exam as a row with its weight and no grade, then enter the grade you want. The calculator solves (want × total weight − points so far) ÷ weight of the rest. In the example above, with the final worth 35% and a target of 85%: (85 × 100 − 5,490) ÷ 35 = 86%.

### What if the grade needed is above 100% or below 0%?

Above 100% means the grade you want cannot be reached without extra credit. Below 0% means you already have it: even a zero on the rest keeps you at or above the target.

### Which letter grade scale does this use?

The scale published by Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY): A is 93 and up, A- is 90 to 92, B+ 87 to 89, B 83 to 86, B- 80 to 82, C+ 77 to 79, C 73 to 76, C- 70 to 72, D+ 67 to 69, D 63 to 66, D- 60 to 62, and F is 59 and below. Schools set their own cutoffs, so check your syllabus.
