## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Class 1 grade A, Class 2 grade B+, Class 3 grade A-, Class 4 grade B, Class 5 grade A, Class 6 grade C+, Class 7 grade Not counted, Class 8 grade Not counted): Your GPA is 3.38 over 6 classes.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| class1 | Class 1 grade | The letter grade in class 1, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |
| class2 | Class 2 grade | The letter grade in class 2, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |
| class3 | Class 3 grade | The letter grade in class 3, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |
| class4 | Class 4 grade | The letter grade in class 4, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |
| class5 | Class 5 grade | The letter grade in class 5, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |
| class6 | Class 6 grade | The letter grade in class 6, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |
| class7 | Class 7 grade | The letter grade in class 7, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |
| class8 | Class 8 grade | The letter grade in class 8, or Not counted for a class with no letter grade. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| gpa | Your GPA | The grade points of the classes divided by the number of classes, on the 4.0 scale. |
| classes | Classes counted | The classes with a letter grade. |
| points | Grade points | The sum of the grade points of the classes. |

## Method

GPA = the sum of the grade points of the classes ÷ the number of classes.

## Assumptions

- Every class counts the same: there are no credit hours. Some schools weight classes differently.
- This is an unweighted GPA: honors and high school credit classes get no extra points.
- Grade points are on the 4.0 scale: A+ and A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0.0.
- The GPA is shown to two decimal places, rounded half up.

## Worked examples

1. class1 = a, class2 = b, class3 = c, class4 = d, class5 = none, class6 = none gives gpa = 2.5, classes = 4, points = 10. 2. class1 = a, class2 = b-plus, class3 = a-minus, class4 = b, class5 = a, class6 = c-plus gives gpa = 3.38, classes = 6, points = 20.3. 3. class1 = a, class2 = f, class3 = b-minus, class4 = none, class5 = none, class6 = none gives gpa = 2.23, classes = 3, points = 6.7. 4. class1 = a-plus, class2 = a, class3 = none, class4 = none, class5 = none, class6 = none gives gpa = 4, classes = 2, points = 8. Source: University of Michigan-Dearborn, Grading System (A, A+ 4.0; A- 3.7; B+ 3.3; B 3.0; B- 2.7; C+ 2.3; C 2.0; C- 1.7; D+ 1.3; D 1.0; D- 0.7; E 0.0), https://catalog.umd.umich.edu/academic-policies-campus/grading-system/ (retrieved 2026-11-01): A+ and A are both 4.0, so the scale tops out at 4.0.

## FAQ

### How do I calculate my middle school GPA?

Turn each letter grade into points, add them up, and divide by the number of classes. A, B, C and D are worth 4, 3, 2 and 1, so those four grades give 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5. One middle school describes exactly this method on its awards page.

### Do I need credit hours?

Not on this page. Every class counts the same, so you only pick grades. If your school gives some classes more weight, use the GPA calculator and enter that weight as the credits.

### How much is each letter grade worth?

A+ and A are 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, and F 0.0. If your school has no plus or minus grades, just pick A, B, C, D or F.

### Is a 3.5 GPA good in middle school?

Schools set their own bars. One district gives Honor Roll for a GPA of 3.0 to 3.49 and High Honor Roll for 3.5 to 4.0, so a 3.5 would be at the top tier there. Check your own school’s rule.

### Do all classes count?

It depends on the school. One district counts all the classes on a student’s schedule each trimester. Pick Not counted for a class with no letter grade or one your school leaves out.

### Does middle school GPA count for college?

Usually the high school transcript is what colleges see, but a high school credit class taken in middle school may count there. Ask your school counselor how your district handles it.
