## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Reading and Writing, module 1 22, Reading and Writing, module 2 22, Math, module 1 18, Math, module 2 18): With 44 correct in Reading and Writing and 36 in Math, the estimated SAT total is 1,110 to 1,160.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| rwModule1 | Reading and Writing, module 1 | Correct answers in Reading and Writing module 1 (0 to 33). |
| rwModule2 | Reading and Writing, module 2 | Correct answers in Reading and Writing module 2 (0 to 33). |
| mathModule1 | Math, module 1 | Correct answers in Math module 1 (0 to 27). |
| mathModule2 | Math, module 2 | Correct answers in Math module 2 (0 to 27). |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| total | Total score | The total score range: the two lower section scores added, to the two upper section scores added. |
| totalLower | Total, lower | Lower Reading and Writing score + lower Math score (400 to 1600). |
| totalUpper | Total, upper | Upper Reading and Writing score + upper Math score (400 to 1600). |
| rw | Reading and Writing | The Reading and Writing section score range from the conversion table (200 to 800). |
| math | Math | The Math section score range from the conversion table (200 to 800). |
| rwRaw | Reading and Writing raw score | Correct answers in Reading and Writing modules 1 and 2 (0 to 66). |
| mathRaw | Math raw score | Correct answers in Math modules 1 and 2 (0 to 54). |

## Method

section raw score = correct answers in module 1 + module 2; section score range from the conversion table; total = sum of the lower values to sum of the upper values

## Assumptions

- The table is College Board’s for the paper (linear) version of digital SAT Practice Test #4, where each Reading and Writing module has 33 questions and each Math module 27.
- The adaptive test in Bluebook scores with item response theory, not a fixed table, so a score from this table is an estimate for other tests.
- A section score is a range because the paper scoring method is a simplified version of the one used on the real test (College Board).

## Worked examples

1. rwModule1 = 22, rwModule2 = 22, mathModule1 = 18, mathModule2 = 18 gives rw = 560 to 580, math = 550 to 580, total = 1,110 to 1,160, totalLower = 1,110, totalUpper = 1,160. 2. rwModule1 = 33, rwModule2 = 33, mathModule1 = 27, mathModule2 = 27 gives rw = 790 to 800, math = 790 to 800, total = 1,580 to 1,600. 3. rwModule1 = 0, rwModule2 = 3, mathModule1 = 4, mathModule2 = 2 gives rw = 200, math = 200, total = 400, totalLower = 400. ## FAQ

### What is the Digital SAT and how is it different from the old SAT?

The Digital SAT, given in the U.S. from March 2024 (and internationally from March 2023), is taken in the Bluebook app. It uses a two-module, adaptive format for each section (Reading and Writing, and Math): your performance on Module 1 decides the difficulty of Module 2. It is shorter than the paper SAT (about 2 hours 14 minutes) and scores with item response theory instead of a simple raw score conversion, so two students with the same number of correct answers can get different scores.

### How does adaptive scoring work on the Digital SAT?

The Digital SAT uses multistage adaptive testing. Each section (Reading and Writing, Math) is given in two modules. Module 1 has a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions for all students. Based on your Module 1 performance, you are routed to an easier or a harder Module 2. The final score comes from item response theory, which takes into account which questions you answered correctly and how hard they were.

### How accurate is this SAT score calculator?

The calculator uses College Board's own raw score conversion table for the paper version of digital SAT Practice Test #4. For that test it gives the same section and total score ranges as College Board's scoring guide. For other practice tests and the real adaptive test it is an estimate, because each test form has its own scale and the adaptive test does not use a fixed table. For official scores, always refer to your College Board score report.

### What is a superscore and how do I calculate it?

A superscore is a policy used by many colleges where they combine your highest section scores from different test dates. For example, if you scored 650 Reading and Writing and 700 Math on one test, then 680 Reading and Writing and 690 Math on another, your superscore would be 680 + 700 = 1380. This is higher than either individual test total. Policies vary by institution, so always check your target college's official policy on superscoring and score choice.

### What are Nationally Representative and SAT User percentiles?

The College Board reports two types of percentiles. Nationally Representative percentiles compare your score to all U.S. 11th and 12th graders, including those who don't typically take the SAT. SAT User percentiles compare your score only to students who actually take the SAT. SAT User percentiles are usually lower than Nationally Representative percentiles for the same score. College Board publishes both tables each year.

### How do I set a target SAT score for my dream college?

Research the 25th and 75th percentile SAT scores for admitted students at your target colleges. A score below the 25th percentile is often considered a 'reach,' while a score above the 75th percentile makes you a strong candidate on scores. The middle 50% range (25th-75th percentile) represents the typical admitted student scores. For example, if a college's middle 50% range is 1450-1570, aim for at least 1450 to be competitive.

### Do colleges accept SAT superscores?

Many colleges superscore the SAT, but policies vary: some superscore, some consider only your highest single test date, some require all scores, and some are test-free. Always verify the current policy on each college's official admissions website, as policies can change from year to year.

### Why do some calculators give different results?

Different calculators use different methods and data. Some are based on the old paper SAT's conversion tables, some invent their own curves, and some try to model the adaptive routing. The College Board's scoring algorithm for the adaptive test is not public, so all third-party calculators give estimates. This calculator uses a published College Board conversion table and says which one.

### Where does this calculator's data come from?

The conversion table is from College Board's guide Scoring Your Paper SAT Practice Test #4, for the paper (linear) version of digital SAT Practice Test #4. Each raw score maps to a lower and upper section score, and the total score range is the sum of the lower values to the sum of the upper values, as the guide describes.

### Can I use this calculator for the paper SAT?

Not for the old paper SAT (before 2024), which had different sections (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math) with 52, 44, and 58 questions and its own conversion tables. The table here is for the paper version of the digital SAT practice test, which has two modules per section like the digital test.

### How many questions are in each Digital SAT module?

On the adaptive test in Bluebook, each Reading and Writing module has 27 questions (54 in the section) and each Math module has 22 (44 in the section), including a few unscored pretest questions. The paper version of the practice test used here has 33 questions per Reading and Writing module and 27 per Math module, so raw scores run 0 to 66 and 0 to 54.

### What's the highest possible Digital SAT score?

The highest possible Digital SAT score is 1600: 800 for Reading and Writing and 800 for Math. The Digital SAT keeps the same 400-1600 total score scale and 200-800 section score scales as the paper SAT.
