## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Words read 112, Errors 6, Time: minutes 1, Time: seconds 0): The WCPM is 106.0, with 94.6% accuracy.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| w | Words read | All the words the student read, right or wrong. |
| e | Errors | Words misread, skipped, swapped or reversed. |
| m | Time: minutes | Whole minutes of reading; 1 for a timed one-minute read. |
| s | Time: seconds | Seconds on top of the minutes. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| wcpm | WCPM | Words correct × 60 ÷ seconds read, to 1 decimal place. |
| correct | Words correct | Words read minus errors. |
| accuracy | Accuracy | Words correct ÷ words read × 100, to 1 decimal place. |
| wpm | Words per minute (all words) | Words read × 60 ÷ seconds, errors included. |
| time | Seconds read | Minutes × 60 + seconds. |

## Method

Seconds read = minutes × 60 + seconds. WCPM = (words read − errors) × 60 ÷ seconds read. Accuracy = (words read − errors) ÷ words read × 100.

## Assumptions

- Errors are counted as the teacher’s guide says (misread, skipped, substituted or reversed words); self-corrections within a few seconds usually do not count.
- WCPM and accuracy are shown to 1 decimal place, halves rounded up; the arithmetic is exact.

## Worked examples

1. w = 112, e = 6, m = 1, s = 0 gives wcpm = 106.0, correct = 106, accuracy = 94.6%, wpm = 112, time = 60. 3. w = 85, e = 3, m = 0, s = 48 gives wcpm = 102.5, correct = 82, accuracy = 96.5%, wpm = 106.25. 4. w = 200, e = 13, m = 1, s = 45.5 gives wcpm = 106.4, correct = 187, accuracy = 93.5%, time = 105.5. ## FAQ

### How do you calculate WCPM?

Subtract the errors from the words read. For a one-minute read, that is the WCPM. For any other time, multiply the words correct by 60 and divide by the seconds read.

### What if the student reads for longer than a minute?

Convert the time to seconds. 240 words correct in 2 minutes 30 seconds is 240 × 60 ÷ 150 = 96 WCPM.

### What if the student finishes in under a minute?

Use the same rule. 82 words correct in 48 seconds is 82 × 60 ÷ 48 = 102.5 WCPM.

### What counts as an error?

Usually a word that is misread, skipped, swapped for another word, or read in the wrong order. A difference in accent or dialect is not an error, and most guides do not count a word the reader corrects at once. Follow your assessment’s own rules.

### How is accuracy worked out?

Words correct ÷ words read × 100. 106 correct out of 112 is 94.6%.

### What is a good WCPM?

It depends on the grade and the time of year. Compare the score with the norms your school or assessment uses, such as the Hasbrouck and Tindal oral reading fluency norms.
