## Method

weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight); points banked = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ 100.

## Assumptions

- Weights are shares of the course in percent. When they add up to less than 100%, the weighted grade covers only the parts entered.
- A grade needs a weight. A weight with no grade is a part not graded yet: it is left out of the weighted grade and counts in the weight left.
- Letter grades follow the Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY) scale: A 93 and up, A- 90 to below 93, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D+ 67, D 63, D- 60, F below 60.

## FAQ

### How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the products, and divide by the sum of the weights. Homework 90% (15%), quizzes 82% (20%), a midterm 76% (25%), and a final 88% (40%) give (1,350 + 1,640 + 1,900 + 3,520) ÷ 100 = 84.1%.

### What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

The weighted grade divides by the weights you entered, so it is your average over the graded parts only. If 40% of the course is graded, the weighted grade is your grade on that 40%. The page also shows the weight left, 100% minus what you entered.

### What are points banked?

Points banked are Σ(grade × weight) ÷ 100: the points you have earned toward a course grade out of 100. With 95% on a part worth 10% and 80% on a part worth 30%, you have banked 9.5 + 24 = 33.5 points. It equals the course grade you would get if every part not entered scored 0.

### How is a weighted grade different from a plain average?

A plain average counts every grade the same. A weighted grade lets a final worth 40% count more than homework worth 15%. With 90% on homework and 70% on the final, the plain average is 80%, but with weights of 15% and 40% the weighted grade is (90 × 15 + 70 × 40) ÷ 55 = 75.45%.

### What if the weights add up to more than 100%?

The page still divides by the sum, so the weighted grade is right for the numbers you entered, but it shows a note. Weights from a syllabus should add up to 100%, so a total above it usually means a typo.

### Which letter scale does this use?

The Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY) scale: A 93 and up, A- 90 to 92, B+ 87 to 89, B 83 to 86, B- 80 to 82, C+ 77 to 79, C 73 to 76, C- 70 to 72, D+ 67 to 69, D 63 to 66, D- 60 to 62, F 59 and below. Your school may use different cutoffs.
