Example with the default inputs (I know Characters, Characters 1,000, A word is 5 characters (typing standard)): At 5 characters a word: About 200 words.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| from | I know | Whether you know the number of characters or the number of words. |
| c | Characters | The character count, as a word processor or a site’s limit counts it. |
| w | Words | The number of words. |
| rule | A word is | The typing standard of 5 characters a word, or the average English word of 4.79 letters. |
| sp | The count includes | Whether the character count includes spaces, which adds one character to each word. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| result | Answer | The estimate as a whole number: about N words, or about N characters. |
| wordCount | Words | Characters ÷ characters per word, unrounded. |
| characterCount | Characters | Words × characters per word, unrounded. |
| perWord | Characters per word | 5 for the typing standard; 5.79 with spaces or 4.79 without for the average English word. |

## Method

Words = characters ÷ characters per word; characters = words × characters per word.

## Assumptions

- The typing standard counts 5 characters a word, spaces and punctuation included.
- The average English word has 4.79 letters; with the space after each word, 5.79 characters.
- The result is an estimate for ordinary English prose; the answer rounds to a whole number, halves up.

## FAQ

### How many words is 1,000 characters?

About 200 words by the typing standard (1,000 ÷ 5), or about 173 by the average English word with spaces (1,000 ÷ 5.79). Short everyday words give more words; technical writing with long words gives fewer.

### How do I convert characters to words?

Divide the character count by the characters in one word. Typing tests use 5 characters, spaces and punctuation included, so 2,500 characters is 500 words. For ordinary English, divide by 5.79 when your count includes spaces, or by 4.79 when it does not.

### Why 4.79 letters a word?

It is the average length of English words as they are used, from Peter Norvig's count of 743 billion words in Google Books. Each word is followed by a space, so a count with spaces has about 5.79 characters a word.

### Why 5 characters a word?

It is the standard word of typing speed tests: words per minute counts every 5 keystrokes, spaces and punctuation included, as one word, so speeds compare fairly across texts.

### How many characters are 300 words?

About 1,500 by the typing standard (300 × 5), or about 1,737 with spaces (300 × 5.79) and 1,437 without (300 × 4.79) by the average English word.

### Is this a word counter?

No. It estimates from a character count you already have, such as a form's character limit. To know the exact number of words in a text, count them with a word processor.
