## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| mode | I know the | How many coins of each kind, or how much each kind weighs. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| total | Total value | What all the coins are worth together. |
| coins | Number of coins | How many coins there are in all. |
| breakdown | By kind | The count and value of each kind of coin you have. |
| grams | Total weight (g) | What the coins weigh at the US Mint’s standard weights, in grams. |
| pounds | Total weight (lb) | The same weight in pounds. |

## Method

total = 1¢ × pennies + 5¢ × nickels + 10¢ × dimes + 25¢ × quarters + 50¢ × half dollars + $1 × dollar coins; by weight, each count = weight ÷ one coin’s weight, rounded to the nearest whole coin.

## Assumptions

- Coins weigh the US Mint’s standard weights: cent 2.500 g (copper-plated zinc, 1982 and later), nickel 5.000 g, dime 2.268 g, quarter 5.670 g, half dollar 11.340 g, dollar 8.100 g.
- Worn coins weigh a little less, and pennies from before 1982 weigh 3.11 g, so a count by weight is an estimate.
- Weigh the coins without the jar or bag.

## Worked examples

1. mode = count, p = 37, n = 12, d = 25, q = 40, h = 0, l = 0 gives total = $13.47, coins = 114, grams = 436. Source: United States Mint, Coin Specifications (weights: cent 2.500 g, nickel 5.000 g, dime 2.268 g, quarter 5.670 g, half dollar 11.340 g, dollar 8.100 g). https://www.usmint.gov/learn/coins-and-medals/circulating-coins/coin-specifications.
2. mode = weight, wq = 0.453592 gives coins = 80, total = $20.00, breakdown = 80 quarters = $20.00. Source: United States Mint, Coin Specifications (weights: cent 2.500 g, nickel 5.000 g, dime 2.268 g, quarter 5.670 g, half dollar 11.340 g, dollar 8.100 g). https://www.usmint.gov/learn/coins-and-medals/circulating-coins/coin-specifications.
3. mode = count, p = 0, n = 0, d = 0, q = 0, h = 3, l = 2 gives total = $3.50, coins = 5, breakdown = 3 half dollars = $1.50; 2 dollar coins = $2.00. Source: United States Mint, Coin Specifications (weights: cent 2.500 g, nickel 5.000 g, dime 2.268 g, quarter 5.670 g, half dollar 11.340 g, dollar 8.100 g). https://www.usmint.gov/learn/coins-and-medals/circulating-coins/coin-specifications.

## FAQ

### How do I count the value of my coins?

Multiply each count by its value and add: pennies 1¢, nickels 5¢, dimes 10¢, quarters 25¢, half dollars 50¢, dollar coins $1. 37 pennies, 12 nickels, 25 dimes and 40 quarters are 37 + 60 + 250 + 1,000 = 1,347¢ = $13.47.

### How many quarters are in a pound?

A quarter weighs 5.670 g and a pound is 453.59237 g, so a pound of quarters is about 453.59 ÷ 5.67 = 80 quarters, or $20.

### How much does each US coin weigh?

The US Mint gives: cent 2.500 g, nickel 5.000 g, dime 2.268 g, quarter 5.670 g, half dollar 11.340 g, and dollar coin 8.100 g.

### How accurate is counting coins by weight?

Close, but not exact. Worn coins weigh a little less than new ones, and pennies from before 1982 weigh 3.11 g, not 2.5 g. The page rounds each count to the nearest whole coin. Weigh each kind on its own, without the jar.

### Why is a dime lighter than a penny?

Coin weights do not follow their values. A dime is 2.268 g of copper and nickel, smaller than a 2.500 g penny, but worth ten times as much.
