## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Divide by Followers, Likes 420, Comments 36, Shares 18, Saves 26, Followers 12,000, Posts 1): 500 engagements is an engagement rate of 4.17%.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| by | Divide by | What to divide the engagements by: followers, or the post’s reach, impressions, or views. |
| likes | Likes | Likes (or reactions) on the post, or on all the posts added together. |
| comments | Comments | Comments on the post, or on all the posts. |
| shares | Shares | Shares or reposts of the post, or of all the posts. |
| saves | Saves | Saves or bookmarks of the post, or of all the posts. |
| followers | Followers | Followers of the account when the posts went out. |
| posts | Posts | How many posts the engagements are added up over. |
| reach | Reach | Accounts that saw the post (unique viewers). |
| impressions | Impressions | Times the post was shown, counting repeat views. |
| views | Views | Views of the video. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| rate | Engagement rate | Engagements ÷ (followers × posts), or ÷ reach, impressions, or views, × 100. |
| engagements | Engagements | Likes + comments + shares + saves. |
| perPost | Engagements per post | Dividing by followers: the engagements ÷ the number of posts. |

## Method

engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ (followers × posts) × 100, or ÷ reach, impressions, or views × 100

## Assumptions

- Engagements are likes, comments, shares, and saves; a count left empty is 0.
- Divided by followers, the rate is per post: the engagements of all the posts ÷ (followers × the number of posts).
- Divided by reach, impressions, or views, the numbers are for one post, or all added up over the same posts.
- The rate shows to 2 decimal places, rounded half up.

## FAQ

### How do I calculate engagement rate?

Add up the engagements (likes, comments, shares and saves), divide by your followers and multiply by 100. 500 engagements on a post from an account with 12,000 followers is 500 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 4.17%.

### Should I divide by followers or by reach?

By followers shows how your audience as a whole responds, and is easy to compare with other accounts. By reach shows how the people who actually saw the post responded, which is better for judging the post itself. 500 engagements on a post that reached 8,000 accounts is 6.25%.

### What is the difference between reach and impressions?

Reach counts each account that saw the post once; impressions count every time it was shown, including repeat views. Impressions are at least as high as reach, so a rate by impressions is lower.

### How do I find the rate over several posts?

Dividing by followers, add up the engagements of all the posts and enter the number of posts. The page divides by followers × posts, which gives the average rate per post: 2,000 engagements on 4 posts with 50,000 followers is 2,000 ÷ 200,000 × 100 = 1%.

### What is a good engagement rate?

It depends on the platform, the size of the account and the industry, and benchmarks change every year. Smaller accounts usually have higher rates than large ones. Compare your rate with your own past posts first.

### Which interactions count as engagements?

This page counts likes, comments, shares and saves. Some tools also count link clicks, profile visits or messages; add them to one of the boxes if you want them in, and use the same rule every time you compare.
