## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Revenue from orders $54,000.00, Orders 1,200): $54,000.00 from 1,200 orders is an average order value of $45.00.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| revenue | Revenue from orders | Sales from the orders after discounts, before tax and shipping. |
| orders | Orders | How many orders the revenue came from. |
| aov | Average order value | Revenue ÷ orders. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| revenue | Revenue from orders | AOV × orders, to the cent. |
| orders | Orders | Revenue ÷ AOV, to the nearest whole order (halves up). |
| aov | Average order value | Revenue ÷ orders, to the cent. |

## Method

AOV = revenue ÷ orders; revenue = AOV × orders; orders = revenue ÷ AOV.

## Assumptions

- Revenue is the sales from the orders after discounts, before tax and shipping, as in Shopify’s sales report.
- Arithmetic is exact on the typed decimals; money shows to the cent and orders to the whole number, halves up.

## Worked examples

1. revenue = $800.00, orders = 10 gives aov = $80.00. Source: Shopify Help Center, "Sales reports" (average order value = (gross sales − discounts) ÷ orders; 10 orders with $1,000 of gross sales and $200 of discounts is ($1,000 − $200) ÷ 10 = $80). https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/sales-report: (1,000 − 200) ÷ 10 = 80.
2. aov = $45.00, orders = 1,200 gives revenue = $54,000.00. Source: Shopify Help Center, "Sales reports" (average order value = (gross sales − discounts) ÷ orders; 10 orders with $1,000 of gross sales and $200 of discounts is ($1,000 − $200) ÷ 10 = $80). https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/sales-report, worked back.
3. revenue = $25,000.00, aov = $62.50 gives orders = 400. Source: Shopify Help Center, "Sales reports" (average order value = (gross sales − discounts) ÷ orders; 10 orders with $1,000 of gross sales and $200 of discounts is ($1,000 − $200) ÷ 10 = $80). https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/sales-report, worked back.
4. revenue = $100.00, orders = 3 gives aov = $33.33. Source: Shopify Help Center, "Sales reports" (average order value = (gross sales − discounts) ÷ orders; 10 orders with $1,000 of gross sales and $200 of discounts is ($1,000 − $200) ÷ 10 = $80). https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/sales-report.

## FAQ

### What is AOV?

AOV, average order value, is the average amount a customer spends each time they place an order. It is the revenue from orders divided by the number of orders.

### How do I calculate average order value?

Divide the revenue from your orders by the number of orders. Shopify's example: 10 orders with $1,000 of sales and $200 of discounts have an AOV of (1,000 − 200) ÷ 10 = $80.

### Should revenue include tax, shipping and discounts?

Shopify's sales report takes discounts off and leaves out tax and shipping, so the AOV reflects only what customers paid for the products. Whatever you choose, use the same rule each time so the numbers compare.

### How many orders do I need to reach a revenue goal?

Divide the goal by your AOV. With an AOV of $62.50, $25,000 of revenue takes 25,000 ÷ 62.50 = 400 orders.

### Is AOV the same as revenue per customer?

No. AOV is per order, while revenue per customer counts every order a customer places in a period. A customer who places 3 orders of $40 has a $40 AOV but brings $120 of revenue.

### Do returns and order edits change the AOV?

Not in Shopify's sales report: its AOV leaves out changes made after an order is placed, such as edits, exchanges and returns. It reflects what customers spent when they ordered. If you take returns off your revenue instead, say so when you compare.
