## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (The amount is Before tax, Amount $100.00, Province or territory Ontario (HST 13%)): At 13% in total, the sales tax on $100.00 is $13.00, for $113.00 in all.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| mode | The amount is | Whether the amount is the price before tax (add tax) or a total that includes tax (take tax out). |
| amount | Amount | The price before tax, or the total with tax, in Canadian dollars, as chosen above. |
| prov | Province or territory | Where the sale takes place; its GST or HST and provincial sales tax rates are used. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| tax | Total sales tax | GST or HST plus any provincial sales tax. |
| total | Total with tax | The price plus all sales tax. |
| price | Price before tax | The price the taxes are charged on. |
| gstHst | GST or HST | The federal GST (5%), or the harmonized sales tax in a province that has one. |
| pst | PST or QST | The provincial sales tax (PST, RST, or QST); 0 where the province has none or charges HST. |
| rate | Combined rate | GST or HST plus provincial sales tax, in percent. |

## Method

Rate = GST or HST + PST or QST. Before tax: GST/HST = price × GST/HST rate ÷ 100, PST = price × PST rate ÷ 100, total = price + both. Including tax: price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), then the same split.

## Assumptions

- Rates in force in 2026: GST 5% everywhere; HST 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia (since April 1, 2025), 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island; PST 7% in British Columbia, RST 7% in Manitoba, PST 6% in Saskatchewan, QST 9.975% in Quebec.
- Each tax is charged on the price before tax (Quebec has charged QST on the price without GST since 2013).
- Not modelled: zero-rated and exempt goods (basic groceries, prescription drugs), point-of-sale rebates, and special PST rates on items such as cars, liquor, or accommodation. Tax is not rounded until it is shown.

## FAQ

### How do I calculate sales tax in Canada?

Multiply the price by each tax rate and add the results. In Ontario, $100 at 13% HST is $13 of tax, $113 in all. In British Columbia, $100 pays $5 GST and $7 PST, $112 in all.

### What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?

GST is the 5% federal goods and services tax charged everywhere in Canada. Five provinces combine it with their own tax into one harmonized sales tax (HST). Four provinces keep a separate provincial sales tax (PST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, RST in Manitoba, QST in Quebec) charged next to the GST.

### Which provinces have the HST?

Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14% since April 1, 2025, down from 15%), and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island (15% each).

### Which provinces and territories charge only GST?

Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge the 5% GST and no provincial sales tax.

### How do I take sales tax out of a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. A $112 receipt in British Columbia is 112 ÷ 1.12 = $100 before tax, so the tax was $12. Do not subtract 12% of the total; that takes out too much ($13.44).

### Is QST charged on the GST in Quebec?

No. Since January 1, 2013 Quebec charges the 9.975% QST on the price before GST, so the combined rate is 14.975%.

### What does this calculator leave out?

Zero-rated and exempt goods such as basic groceries and prescription drugs, point-of-sale rebates such as the Ontario rebate on books and children's clothing, and special provincial rates on cars, liquor or hotel rooms. It is an estimate, not tax advice.
