## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Hourly pay $25.00, Hours a week 40, Paid weeks a year 52): $25.00 an hour for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is $52,000.00 a year.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| salary | Yearly salary | Gross pay for a year, before tax. |
| hourly | Hourly pay | Gross pay for one hour of work, before tax. |
| hours | Hours a week | The hours you are paid for in a week. A full-time week is often 40. |
| weeks | Paid weeks a year | The weeks you are paid for in a year: 52, less any unpaid weeks off. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| salary | Yearly salary | Gross pay for a year, before tax. |
| hourly | Hourly pay | Gross pay for one hour of work, before tax. |
| hours | Hours a week | The hours you are paid for in a week. A full-time week is often 40. |
| weeks | Paid weeks a year | The weeks you are paid for in a year: 52, less any unpaid weeks off. |
| monthly | Per month | The yearly salary divided by 12. |
| biweekly | Every two weeks | The yearly salary divided by 26 pay periods. |
| weekly | Per week | The yearly salary divided by 52 weeks. |

## Method

salary = hourly × hours × weeks, with hours paid a week and weeks paid a year (52 when every week is paid).

## Assumptions

- Pay is gross: before tax and other deductions.
- Every paid hour earns the same rate. Overtime at a higher rate is not included.
- Paid time off counts as paid weeks; only unpaid weeks off lower the weeks a year.
- Per month is the salary ÷ 12, every two weeks is ÷ 26, and per week is ÷ 52.

## Worked examples

1. hourly = $20.00, hours = 38, weeks = 51 gives salary = $38,760.00, monthly = $3,230.00, biweekly = $1,490.77, weekly = $745.38. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 20 × 38 × 51 = 38,760; 38,760 ÷ 12 = 3,230.
2. hourly = $9.38, hours = 40, weeks = 52 gives salary = $19,500.00, weekly = $375.00. Source: 29 CFR 778.113(a): a $375 weekly salary for 40 hours is a $9.375 regular rate; $375 × 52 = $19,500.
3. hourly = $20.00, hours = 40, weeks = 52 gives salary = $41,600.00, monthly = $3,466.67, biweekly = $1,600.00, weekly = $800.00. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 20 × 40 × 52 = 41,600 (2,080 hours a year).
4. salary = $52,000.00, hourly = $25.00, hours = 40 gives weeks = 52. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 52,000 ÷ (25 × 40) = 52 weeks.

## FAQ

### How do I convert hourly pay to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you are paid in a year. At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, that is 25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year.

### What is $20 an hour a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours), $20 an hour is 20 × 2,080 = $41,600 a year: $3,466.67 a month, $1,600 every two weeks, or $800 a week.

### What if I take unpaid time off?

Lower the paid weeks a year by the unpaid weeks. At $20 an hour, 38 hours a week and one unpaid week, the year is 20 × 38 × 51 = $38,760.

### Why is my monthly pay not 4 weeks of pay?

A year has 52 weeks, and 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks a month. So monthly pay is the yearly amount ÷ 12, a little more than 4 weeks of pay.

### Does the salary include overtime?

No. Every hour is paid at the rate you enter. Hours over 40 in a week usually earn time and a half under federal law; use the overtime calculator for that.

### Is this before or after tax?

Before tax. The salary is gross pay, before income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, and other deductions.
