## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Lots 1, Lot size Standard (100,000 units), Pip size 0.0001, Account currency is The quote (second) currency, Move in pips (optional) 20): One pip on 100,000 units is worth 10 in your account currency.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| lots | Lots | How many lots you trade; 0.1 of a standard lot is a mini lot. |
| size | Lot size | Units of the base currency in one lot. |
| pip | Pip size | The price step of one pip: 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 when the quote currency is the yen. |
| account | Account currency is | The quote currency (USD account, EUR/USD), the base currency (USD account, USD/JPY), or a third currency. |
| price | Exchange rate of the pair | The price of the pair: quote currency per 1 unit of base currency (150.25 for USD/JPY). |
| conv | Quote currency in account currency | What 1 unit of the quote currency is worth in your account currency (for EUR/GBP in a USD account, the GBP/USD rate, such as 1.27). |
| pips | Move in pips (optional) | How many pips the price moves in your favour; a negative number is a loss. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| pipValue | Value of one pip | In the account currency, rounded half up to 4 decimals from the exact value. |
| pipQuote | Value of one pip in the quote currency | Units × pip size, exactly. |
| profit | Profit or loss for the move | Pip value × pips, in the account currency, rounded half up to 2 decimals from the exact value. |
| units | Position size (units) | Lots × lot size. |
| text | In words | The pip value as a sentence. |

## Method

Pip value = lots × lot size × pip size (quote currency); ÷ the pair’s rate when the account is in the base currency; × the quote-to-account rate otherwise.

## Assumptions

- You type every rate; the page fetches no prices.
- The pip value is exact from the typed decimals and rounded half up only for display: 4 decimals for the pip value, 2 for the profit or loss.
- In a base-currency account the pip value uses the current rate; brokers may use the closing rate of the trade.

## FAQ

### What is a pip in forex?

The usual smallest step of an exchange rate: 0.0001 for most currency pairs, and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. EUR/USD moving from 1.3000 to 1.3010 is a 10-pip move.

### How do I calculate pip value?

Multiply the position size in units by the pip size: that is the pip value in the quote (second) currency. 1 standard lot of EUR/USD is 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10 per pip. Convert it if your account is in another currency.

### How do I find the pip value when my account is in the base currency?

Divide the quote-currency pip value by the pair’s rate. For 1 standard lot of USD/JPY at 150.25 in a USD account: 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000, and ¥1,000 ÷ 150.25 = $6.6556 per pip.

### What if my account currency is not in the pair?

Multiply the quote-currency pip value by the rate of the quote currency in your account currency. For 2 mini lots of EUR/GBP in a USD account with GBP/USD at 1.27: 20,000 × 0.0001 = £2, × 1.27 = $2.54 per pip.

### How much is a pip worth on a mini or micro lot?

A mini lot is 10,000 units and a micro lot 1,000, so on a USD-quoted pair like EUR/USD a pip is worth $1 and $0.10. A standard lot (100,000 units) is $10 per pip.

### How do I work out profit from pips?

Multiply the pip value by the number of pips the price moved in your favour. 20 pips on a standard lot of EUR/USD is 20 × $10 = $200; a move against you is a loss of the same size.
