## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| annual | Per year | Gross pay for a year, before tax. |
| hourly | Per hour | Gross pay for one hour of work. |
| monthly | Per month | Gross pay for a month: a year’s pay ÷ 12. |
| biweekly | Every two weeks | Gross pay for two weeks: a year’s pay ÷ 26. |
| semimonthly | Twice a month | Gross pay for half a month (24 pay days a year): a year’s pay ÷ 24. |
| weekly | Per week | Gross pay for one week: a year’s pay ÷ 52. |
| daily | Per day | Gross pay for one working day: a week’s pay ÷ days a week. |
| quarterly | Per quarter | Gross pay for three months: a year’s pay ÷ 4. |
| hours | Hours a week | The hours paid in a week. A full-time week is often 40. |
| days | Days a week | The days worked in a week, used for the daily pay. |

## Method

yearly = weekly × 52 = every two weeks × 26 = twice a month × 24 = monthly × 12 = quarterly × 4; weekly = hourly × hours a week = daily × days a week.

## Assumptions

- A year has 52 weeks, 26 two-week pay periods, 24 half-month pay periods, 12 months and 4 quarters.
- Pay is gross: before tax and other deductions. Every paid hour earns the same rate, with no overtime.
- Paid holidays and vacation are paid weeks, so they do not change the conversion.

## Worked examples

1. hourly = $30.00, hours = 37.5, days = 5 gives weekly = $1,125.00, daily = $225.00, annual = $58,500.00, biweekly = $2,250.00, semimonthly = $2,437.50, monthly = $4,875.00, quarterly = $14,625.00. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 30 × 37.5 = 1,125 a week; × 52 = 58,500 a year.
2. monthly = $5,000.00, hours = 40, days = 5 gives annual = $60,000.00, weekly = $1,153.85, hourly = $28.85, semimonthly = $2,500.00, biweekly = $2,307.69, daily = $230.77, quarterly = $15,000.00. Source: 29 CFR 778.113(b): a monthly salary × 12 ÷ 52 is its weekly equivalent; hand calculation in content.mdx.
3. semimonthly = $2,000.00, hours = 40, days = 5 gives weekly = $923.08, hourly = $23.08, annual = $48,000.00. Source: 29 CFR 778.113(b): a semimonthly salary × 24 ÷ 52 is its weekly equivalent; hand calculation in content.mdx.
4. weekly = $350.00, hours = 35, days = 5 gives hourly = $10.00, daily = $70.00, annual = $18,200.00. Source: 29 CFR 778.113(a): $350 a week for 35 hours is a $10 regular rate.
5. quarterly = $15,000.00, hours = 40, days = 5 gives annual = $60,000.00, weekly = $1,153.85, hourly = $28.85. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 15,000 × 4 = 60,000 a year; ÷ 52 = 1,153.85 a week; ÷ 40 = 28.85.
6. daily = $200.00, hours = 32, days = 4 gives weekly = $800.00, hourly = $25.00, annual = $41,600.00. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 200 × 4 = 800 a week; 800 ÷ 32 = 25 an hour.

## FAQ

### How do I convert a yearly salary to monthly pay?

Divide by 12. A $60,000 salary is 60,000 ÷ 12 = $5,000 a month. Per week it is 60,000 ÷ 52 = $1,153.85, and per hour at 40 hours a week it is 1,153.85 ÷ 40 = $28.85.

### What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, 24 times a year. On the same salary a semimonthly paycheck is larger: $60,000 is $2,307.69 biweekly but $2,500 semimonthly.

### Why is a month not four weeks of pay?

A year has 52 weeks, so a month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks. Federal overtime rules convert the same way: a monthly salary times 12, divided by 52, is its weekly amount (29 CFR 778.113).

### Is this take-home pay?

No. The amounts are gross pay, before federal, state and local income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, and other deductions such as health insurance or retirement savings. This calculator does not work out tax.

### How do paid holidays and vacation change the numbers?

They do not. Paid days off are paid time, so a salary stays the same per year, month and week. The hourly amount is your pay per paid hour.

### What is $30 an hour as a salary?

At 37.5 hours a week it is 30 × 37.5 = $1,125 a week and 1,125 × 52 = $58,500 a year. At 40 hours a week it is $62,400 a year.
