## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Yearly salary $60,000.00, Hours a week 40, Paid weeks a year 52): A salary of $60,000.00 a year for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is $28.85 an hour.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| salary | Yearly salary | Gross pay for a year, before tax. |
| hourly | Hourly pay | Gross pay for one hour of work, before tax. |
| hours | Hours a week | The hours you are paid for in a week. A full-time week is often 40. |
| weeks | Paid weeks a year | The weeks you are paid for in a year: 52, less any unpaid weeks off. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| salary | Yearly salary | Gross pay for a year, before tax. |
| hourly | Hourly pay | Gross pay for one hour of work, before tax. |
| hours | Hours a week | The hours you are paid for in a week. A full-time week is often 40. |
| weeks | Paid weeks a year | The weeks you are paid for in a year: 52, less any unpaid weeks off. |
| monthly | Per month | The yearly salary divided by 12. |
| biweekly | Every two weeks | The yearly salary divided by 26 pay periods. |
| weekly | Per week | The yearly salary divided by 52 weeks. |

## Method

salary = hourly × hours × weeks, with hours paid a week and weeks paid a year (52 when every week is paid).

## Assumptions

- Pay is gross: before tax and other deductions.
- Every paid hour earns the same rate. Overtime at a higher rate is not included.
- Paid time off counts as paid weeks; only unpaid weeks off lower the weeks a year.
- Per month is the salary ÷ 12, every two weeks is ÷ 26, and per week is ÷ 52.

## Worked examples

1. salary = $75,000.00, hours = 37.5, weeks = 52 gives hourly = $38.46, monthly = $6,250.00, biweekly = $2,884.62, weekly = $1,442.31. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 75,000 ÷ (37.5 × 52) = 75,000 ÷ 1,950 = 38.46.
2. salary = $18,200.00, hours = 35, weeks = 52 gives hourly = $10.00, weekly = $350.00. Source: 29 CFR 778.113(a): a $350 weekly salary for a 35-hour week is a $10 regular rate; $350 × 52 = $18,200 a year.
3. salary = $89,033.00, hours = 40, weeks = 52.175 gives hourly = $42.66. Source: OPM, Computing Hourly Rates of Pay Using the 2,087-Hour Divisor: $89,033 ÷ 2,087 = $42.66 (rounded to the cent, hence the tolerance); 2,087 ÷ 40 = 52.175 weeks.
4. salary = $50,000.00, hours = 40, weeks = 50 gives hourly = $25.00. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: two unpaid weeks: 50,000 ÷ (40 × 50) = 25.
5. salary = $60,000.00, hourly = $30.00, weeks = 50 gives hours = 40. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 60,000 ÷ (30 × 50) = 40 hours a week.

## FAQ

### How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you are paid in a year: hours a week × 52. For $60,000 at 40 hours a week, that is 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

### How many work hours are in a year?

A 40-hour week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. A 37.5-hour week is 1,950 hours. The federal government uses 2,087 hours (the average over a 28-year calendar cycle) to turn a federal salary into an hourly rate.

### Should I count paid vacation and holidays?

Yes, if you are paid for them: leave the paid weeks at 52. Take off only weeks you are not paid for. With 2 unpaid weeks, $50,000 at 40 hours is 50,000 ÷ (40 × 50) = $25 an hour.

### Is this my take-home pay per hour?

No. It is gross pay, before federal, state and local income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, and other deductions. Take-home pay is lower.

### How is a salary turned into an hourly rate for overtime?

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, a salary is first turned into its weekly amount (a yearly salary ÷ 52), then divided by the hours it is meant to pay for. A $350 weekly salary for 35 hours is a $10 regular rate (29 CFR 778.113).

### What is $75,000 a year per hour?

At 40 hours a week it is 75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06 an hour. At 37.5 hours a week it is 75,000 ÷ 1,950 = $38.46 an hour.
