## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Hourly pay $20.00, Overtime hours 5): At $20.00 an hour, time and a half is $30.00 an hour, so 5 overtime hours pay $150.00.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| rate | Hourly pay | Your regular hourly rate. |
| otHours | Overtime hours | The hours paid at time and a half, for example the hours over 40 in a week. |
| otPay | Overtime pay | The pay for the overtime hours: 1.5 × hourly pay × overtime hours. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| rate | Hourly pay | Your regular hourly rate. |
| otHours | Overtime hours | The hours paid at time and a half, for example the hours over 40 in a week. |
| otPay | Overtime pay | The pay for the overtime hours: 1.5 × hourly pay × overtime hours. |
| otRate | Your time-and-a-half rate | The overtime rate: 1.5 times the hourly rate. |
| doubleRate | Double time rate | Two times the hourly rate, for comparison. |

## Method

overtime pay = 1.5 × hourly pay × overtime hours; time-and-a-half rate = 1.5 × hourly pay (FLSA: hours over 40 in a workweek).

## Assumptions

- Time and a half is 1.5 times the regular hourly rate, the federal overtime rate under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Under federal law, overtime hours are the hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime; this calculator follows the federal rule only.
- The regular rate is one hourly rate, with no bonuses or piece rates.
- Pay is gross, before tax.

## Worked examples

1. rate = $12.00, otHours = 6 gives otRate = $18.00, otPay = $108.00, doubleRate = $24.00. Source: 29 CFR 778.110(a): at $12 an hour, 6 hours over 40 are paid $18 an hour (46 hours: $588 = 40 × 12 + 6 × 18).
2. rate = $18.00, otHours = 5 gives otRate = $27.00, otPay = $135.00. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 1.5 × 18 = 27; 27 × 5 = 135.
3. otPay = $150.00, otHours = 4 gives otRate = $37.50, rate = $25.00. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 150 ÷ 4 = 37.5 an hour at time and a half; 37.5 ÷ 1.5 = 25.
4. rate = $20.00, otPay = $210.00 gives otRate = $30.00, otHours = 7. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 1.5 × 20 = 30; 210 ÷ 30 = 7 hours.

## FAQ

### How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly pay by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is 20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour. Then multiply by your overtime hours: 5 hours pay 5 × 30 = $150.

### When do I get time and a half?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt workers get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Federal law does not require it for weekends, holidays or more than 8 hours in a day, although some states and employers pay it then.

### What is time and a half for $15 an hour?

15 × 1.5 = $22.50 an hour. Double time would be $30 an hour.

### How do I find my hourly rate from my overtime pay?

Divide the overtime pay by the overtime hours to get the time-and-a-half rate, then divide by 1.5. $150 for 4 hours is $37.50 an hour at time and a half, so the hourly rate is 37.50 ÷ 1.5 = $25.

### What is the difference between time and a half and double time?

Time and a half is 1.5 times the hourly rate; double time is 2 times. Federal law requires time and a half for hours over 40 in a week. Double time comes from some state laws and employment contracts.

### How much is my whole paycheck with overtime?

Add 40 hours at your regular rate to the overtime pay. At $12 an hour and 46 hours: 40 × 12 = $480 plus 6 × 18 = $108, $588 in all. The overtime calculator does this for the whole week.
