## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Number to round 29,504): 29,504 rounded to the nearest thousand is 30,000.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| number | Number to round | The number to round, as you would write it. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| rounded | Rounded number | The number rounded to the nearest thousand; halves round away from zero. |
| rule | Why | The digit to the right of the thousands place, and what it does. |
| typed | Number | The number to round, with every digit as typed, so the answer does not round it first. |

## Method

Look at the hundreds digit: 5 or more rounds the size of the number up to the next thousand; less than 5 keeps the thousands digit. Every digit to the right is dropped.

## Assumptions

- The number is taken as the decimal it is written as, so an exact halfway value is a true tie.
- Halves round away from zero (round half up on the size of the number): a negative number rounds like its size, with the minus sign kept.

1. number = 29,504 gives rounded = 30,000, rule = The hundreds digit is 5, which is 5 or more, so the thousands digit goes up by 1.. ## FAQ

### How do you round to the nearest thousand?

Look at the hundreds digit. If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the thousands digit. If it is less than 5, keep the thousands digit. Then replace every digit to the right with zeros. 29,504 has a 5 in the hundreds place, so it rounds to 30,000.

### Which digit decides?

Only the hundreds digit. 3,499 rounds to 3,000 because its hundreds digit is 4. The 9s after it do not push the 4 up first.

### What happens to numbers under 500?

They round to 0. 499 has a 4 in the hundreds place, and its thousands digit is 0, so it stays 0. 500 is exactly halfway and rounds up to 1,000.

### What happens when the thousands digit is 9?

It carries. In 29,504 the 9 goes up by 1 to 10, so you write 0 and add 1 to the ten thousands digit. The answer is 30,000.

### How do negative numbers round?

Round the size of the number and keep the minus sign. −1,500 rounds to −2,000, the same way 1,500 rounds to 2,000. So a half rounds away from zero.

### Do decimals change the answer?

Decimals only matter through the digits to their left. 999.5 has a 9 in the hundreds place, so it rounds to 1,000.
