## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Distance 26.2187574564543 mi, Time 210 min, Pace per Mile): Covering 26.22 mi in 210 min is a pace of 8.01 min.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| d | Distance | The distance of the run or race. A marathon is 42.195 km (26.2188 mi). |
| t | Time | The time taken for the whole distance. |
| p | Pace | The time taken for each mile or each kilometer. |
| per | Pace per | Whether the pace is the time per mile or the time per kilometer. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| distance | Distance | The distance of the run or race. A marathon is 42.195 km (26.2188 mi). |
| time | Time | The time taken for the whole distance. |
| pace | Pace | The time taken for each mile or each kilometer. |
| paceClock | Pace | The pace per mile or per kilometer (as chosen), as m:ss. |
| finish | Finish time | The time for the whole distance, as h:mm:ss. |
| perMile | Pace per mile | The time for each mile, as m:ss. |
| perKm | Pace per kilometer | The time for each kilometer, as m:ss. |
| speed | Average speed | The average speed: distance ÷ time. |

## Method

pace = time ÷ distance, with the distance in miles (1 mi = 1,609.344 m) or kilometers; speed = distance ÷ time.

## Assumptions

- The pace is the average over the whole distance, as if every mile or kilometer took the same time.
- Finish time and paces are rounded to the nearest second for display.
- The distance is at least 1 meter, and the time and the pace are at least 1 second.

## Worked examples

1. per = mi, d = 42,195, t = 12,600 gives p = 480.571973, perMile = 8:01, perKm = 4:59, finish = 3:30:00, speed = 3.34881. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 12,600 s ÷ (42,195 ÷ 1,609.344) mi = 480.57 s = 8:01 per mile; 12,600 ÷ 42.195 = 298.61 s = 4:59 per km (World Athletics: marathon 42.195 km; NIST SP 811: 1 mi = 1,609.344 m).
2. per = km, d = 5,000, t = 1,500 gives p = 300, paceClock = 5:00, perKm = 5:00, perMile = 8:03. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 1,500 s ÷ 5 km = 300 s = 5:00 per km; 300 × 1.609344 = 482.8 s = 8:03 per mile.
3. per = mi, d = 16,093.44, p = 480 gives t = 4,800, finish = 1:20:00. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 10 × 480 s = 4,800 s = 1:20:00.
4. per = km, t = 3,600, p = 240 gives d = 15,000. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 3,600 s ÷ 240 s per km = 15 km.

## FAQ

### How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your time by the distance. A 5 km run in 25 minutes is 25 ÷ 5 = 5 minutes per kilometer. A marathon in 3 hours 30 minutes is 210 ÷ 26.2188 = 8.01 minutes, about 8:01 per mile.

### How do I work out my finish time from a pace?

Multiply the pace by the distance. Ten miles at 8:00 per mile is 10 × 8 = 80 minutes, or 1:20:00.

### How do I convert pace per kilometer to pace per mile?

Multiply by 1.609344, because a mile is 1,609.344 meters. A 5:00 per km pace is 5 × 1.609344 = 8.05 minutes, which is 8:03 per mile. To go from per mile to per km, divide by 1.609344.

### How long is a marathon?

A marathon is 42.195 km, which is 26.2188 miles. A half marathon is half of that: 21.0975 km or 13.1094 miles. A 10K is 10 km (6.2137 miles) and a 5K is 5 km (3.1069 miles).

### How do I type a time like 3:30:00?

Type it with units, up to two parts, for example 3 h 30 min, 25 min 30 s, or 210 min. The result also shows the finish time and paces as h:mm:ss or m:ss.
