# What is my club’s swing weight?

Works out a golf club’s swing weight on the Lorythmic scale (A0 to G9) from its weight and balance point, and the head weight to add or remove to reach a target swing weight.

## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Club weight 11 oz, Balance point 33.5 in, Target swing weight D2, Club length 45.5 in): A club of 11 oz balancing at 33.5 in has a swing weight of D1.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| w | Club weight | The total weight of the club: head, shaft and grip. |
| bp | Balance point | How far from the grip end the club balances on a knife edge. |
| t | Target swing weight | The swing weight you want, a letter A to G and a digit 0 to 9, such as D2. Leave it empty to skip. |
| len | Club length | The club’s length from the grip end; head weight is taken to sit this far from the grip end. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| swingWeight | Swing weight | The Lorythmic swing weight, to the nearest point (halves round up). |
| moment | Moment (inch-ounces) | Club weight in ounces × (balance point in inches − 14). |
| points | Points above A0 | (Moment − 161) ÷ 1.75: 0 is A0, 30 is D0, 69 is G9. |
| exact | Swing weight to a tenth | The swing weight with tenths of a point, such as D1.4. |
| changeOz | Head weight change (oz) | Weight to add at the head (or remove, when negative) to reach the target, in ounces. |
| changeG | Head weight change (g) | The same change in grams. |
| advice | To reach the target | What to do to reach the target swing weight. |

## Method

Moment = club weight (oz) × (balance point (in) − 14); points = (moment − 161) ÷ 1.75, where 0 is A0, 10 is B0, 20 is C0, 30 is D0; head change = (target points − points) × 1.75 ÷ (club length − 14).

## Assumptions

- The Lorythmic scale: a fulcrum 14 inches from the grip end, C0 = 196 inch-ounces and 1.75 inch-ounces a point.
- The swing weight shown is the nearest whole point; halves round up.
- Added head weight sits at the club length from the grip end.

## FAQ

### What is swing weight?

Swing weight is how heavy a golf club feels when you swing it, measured as the club's balance about a point 14 inches from the grip end. Two clubs of the same total weight can have different swing weights: the one with more weight toward the head feels heavier.

### How is swing weight calculated?

Multiply the club's total weight in ounces by its balance point in inches minus 14. That moment, in inch-ounces, is read on the Lorythmic scale: C0 is 196 inch-ounces and each point is 1.75 inch-ounces, so D0 is 213.5. A 12 oz club balancing at 32 inches has 12 × 18 = 216 inch-ounces, which is D1.

### What do the letters and numbers mean?

The scale runs A0, A1 … A9, B0 … G9, 70 points in all, each 1.75 inch-ounces heavier than the one before. A0 is 161 inch-ounces and G9 is 281.75. The letter and digit are only a name for the moment: D2 is 217 inch-ounces, and anything from 216.125 up to (not including) 217.875 rounds to D2.

### How much head weight changes swing weight by one point?

One point is 1.75 inch-ounces. A weight at the head of a 45-inch driver sits 31 inches past the fulcrum, so one point is 1.75 ÷ 31 = 0.056 oz, about 1.6 g. On a shorter iron the head is closer to the fulcrum, so each point takes a little more weight.

### How do I find the balance point?

Lay the club across a thin edge, such as a ruler on its side, and slide it until it balances. Measure from the end of the grip to that point. Use the whole club as you play it: grip, shaft and head.

### Does a heavier grip lower swing weight?

Yes. A heavier grip moves the balance point toward the grip end, which lowers the moment about the 14-inch fulcrum even though the club is heavier overall. Weigh the club and find the balance point again after a grip change, then recalculate.
