## Default answer

Example with the default inputs (Wins 10, Losses 6, Ties 0): A record of 10 wins, 6 losses and 0 ties is a win percentage of 62.5%.

## Inputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| w | Wins | The number of games won. |
| l | Losses | The number of games lost. |
| t | Ties | The number of games tied (drawn). Enter 0 if there were none. |
| pct | Win percentage | The share of games won, counting each tie as half a win, in percent. |

## Outputs

| Key | Label | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| wins | Wins | The number of games won. |
| losses | Losses | The number of games lost. |
| ties | Ties | The number of games tied (drawn). Enter 0 if there were none. |
| pct | Win percentage | The share of games won, counting each tie as half a win, in percent. |
| decimal | As in the standings | The same winning percentage as a decimal with three places, the way standings print it (.625). |
| played | Games played | Wins + losses + ties. |

## Method

win % = (W + T ÷ 2) ÷ (W + L + T) × 100: each tie counts as half a win and half a loss.

## Assumptions

- A tie counts as half a win and half a loss, as in NFL standings. With no ties this is wins ÷ games, as in MLB and NBA standings.
- Wins, losses and ties are from 0 to 1,000,000, and at least one game was played. Solved counts may be fractions; round up to the next whole game for a target.
- Leagues that rank by points (the NHL, most soccer leagues) use a points percentage instead, which this calculator does not compute.

## Worked examples

1. w = 10, l = 6, t = 0 gives pct = 62.5%, decimal = .625, played = 16. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 10 ÷ 16 = 0.625 = 62.5%.
2. w = 9, l = 7, t = 1 gives pct = 55.882353%, decimal = .559. Source: NFL tiebreaking procedures (a tie is half a win and half a loss); hand calculation in content.mdx: (9 + 0.5) ÷ 17 = 0.5588.
3. pct = 60%, l = 62, t = 0 gives w = 93. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: W = 0.6 × 62 ÷ (1 − 0.6) = 93.
4. pct = 75%, w = 12, t = 0 gives l = 4. Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: L = 12 ÷ 0.75 − 12 = 4.

## FAQ

### How do I calculate a win percentage?

Divide the wins by the games played. A 10–6 record is 10 ÷ 16 = 0.625, or 62.5%. Standings print it as .625.

### How do ties count?

In the NFL, a tie counts as half a win and half a loss, so win % = (wins + ties ÷ 2) ÷ games. A 9–7–1 record is (9 + 0.5) ÷ 17 = .559. With no ties the formula is simply wins ÷ games.

### How many wins do I need for a target percentage?

Enter the target, the losses and the ties, and leave wins empty. With no ties, wins = p × losses ÷ (1 − p), where p is the target as a decimal. For .600 with 62 losses: 0.6 × 62 ÷ 0.4 = 93 wins.

### Why do standings show .625 instead of 62.5%?

It is a tradition in American sports standings to show the winning percentage as a decimal with three places and no leading zero. A perfect record is 1.000. Both mean the same thing.

### Does this work for hockey or soccer?

Only for a simple win rate. The NHL and most soccer leagues rank teams by points, and their points percentage counts overtime losses or draws differently.
