Area: 168 ft². The area is 168 ft².

How to calculate

Computes the area of a rectangle, circle, triangle or trapezoid, times how many, in square feet, square yards and square metres, with an optional cost.

Example with the default inputs (Shape Rectangle or square, Length 12 ft, Width 14 ft, How many 1, Price per Square foot): The area is 168 ft².

Method: area = area of the shape × how many; square yards = square feet ÷ 9

  • Rectangle: length × width. Circle: π × diameter² ÷ 4. Triangle: base × height ÷ 2. Trapezoid: (top + bottom) ÷ 2 × height.
  • The area is the flat floor area. It adds nothing for waste or pattern matching.
  • The cost is the area in the price unit × the price.

Worked examples

Each example is checked against the calculator on every build.

  1. Shape Rectangle or square, Length 12 ft, Width 14 ft, How many 1, Price per Square foot, Price $3.50 gives Area 168 ft², Cost $588.00.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 12 × 14 = 168 ft²; × $3.50 = $588
  2. Shape Circle, Diameter 10 ft, How many 1, Price per Square foot gives Area 78.54 ft².Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: π × 10² ÷ 4 = 78.54 ft²
  3. Shape Triangle, Base 10 ft, Height 8 ft, How many 2, Price per Square foot gives Area 80 ft².Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 10 × 8 ÷ 2 = 40 ft²; × 2 = 80 ft²
  4. Shape Trapezoid, Top side 6 ft, Bottom side 10 ft, Height 9 ft, How many 1, Price per Square yard, Price $30.00 gives Area 72 ft², Square yards 8 yd², Cost $240.00.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: (6 + 10) ÷ 2 × 9 = 72 ft² = 8 yd²; × $30 = $240

How it works

The area of one shape:

  • Rectangle or square: length × width.
  • Circle: π × diameter² ÷ 4.
  • Triangle: base × height ÷ 2, where the height is measured at right angles to the base.
  • Trapezoid: (top side + bottom side) ÷ 2 × height, where the two sides are parallel and the height is the distance between them.

Total area = area of one shape × how many.

Square yards = square feet ÷ 9. Square metres use 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly.

Cost = total area in the price unit × the price. It is only shown when you enter a price.

Worked examples by hand

A 12 ft × 14 ft room at $3.50 a square foot. 12 × 14 = 168 ft² (18.67 yd², 15.61 m²). 168 × 3.50 = $588.

A round patio 10 ft across. π × 10² ÷ 4 = 25π = 78.54 ft².

Two triangles, each with a 10 ft base and 8 ft height. 10 × 8 ÷ 2 = 40 ft² each, so 80 ft².

A trapezoid with parallel sides of 6 ft and 10 ft, 9 ft apart, at $30 a square yard. (6 + 10) ÷ 2 × 9 = 72 ft², which is 72 ÷ 9 = 8 yd². 8 × 30 = $240.

Other questions people ask

How do I calculate square footage?

For a rectangle, multiply the length by the width, both in feet. A room 12 ft by 14 ft is 12 × 14 = 168 square feet.

How do I find the square footage of an L-shaped room?

Split the room into rectangles, work out each one, and add them. A 12 × 14 room with a 4 × 6 nook is 168 + 24 = 192 square feet.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

Nine. A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. Carpet is often priced per square yard: divide square feet by 9.

How do I convert square feet to square metres?

Multiply by 0.09290304. A foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². 168 square feet is 15.61 m².

What if my measurements are in inches?

Type them with the unit, such as 150 in, or pick inches in the unit list. The calculator converts every size before it multiplies.

Should I buy extra flooring?

The area here is the exact floor area with nothing added. Flooring is cut to fit at the walls and patterns must line up, so buy extra; the product’s installation guide says how much.
