How do I convert steps to miles?
Enter your steps and your step length to see how far you walked, or enter a distance to see how many steps it takes.
- Distance
- 4.734848 mi
10,000 steps of 2.5 ft is 4.734848 mi.
- Steps per mile
- 2,112
Distance: 4.734848 mi. 10,000 steps of 2.5 ft is 4.734848 mi.
How to calculate
Converts a number of walking steps to miles or kilometers from your step length, or finds the steps for a distance.
Example with the default inputs (Steps 10,000, Step length 2.5 ft): 10,000 steps of 2.5 ft is 7,620 m.
Formula: distance = steps × step length. Steps per mile = 5,280 ft ÷ step length.
- Every step has the same length. Measure yours: walk 20 steps, measure the distance, and divide by 20.
- The default step length of 2.5 ft is inside the usual adult walking range of about 2.1 to 2.5 ft (Healthline).
- 1 mile is 5,280 feet (1,609.344 m) and 1 foot is 0.3048 m exactly (NIST SP 811).
Worked examples
Each example is checked against the calculator on every build.
- Steps 10,000, Step length 2.5 ft gives Distance 7,620 m, Steps per mile 2,112.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 2.5 ft = 0.762 m; 10,000 × 0.762 m = 7,620 m (4.73 mi); 5,280 ft ÷ 2.5 ft = 2,112 steps per mile
- Distance 1,609.344 m, Step length 2.5 ft gives Steps 2,112.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 1 mile = 5,280 ft = 1,609.344 m (NIST SP 811); 5,280 ÷ 2.5 = 2,112 steps
- Steps 2,000, Distance 1,609.344 m gives Step length 2.64 ft.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 1,609.344 m ÷ 2,000 = 0.804672 m (2.64 ft)
How it works
The distance you walk is the number of steps times the length of one step:
distance = steps × step length
Fill in any two of the three and the converter finds the third:
- distance = steps × step length
- steps = distance ÷ step length
- step length = distance ÷ steps
It also shows the steps per mile: 5,280 ft ÷ step length (1 mile = 5,280 ft = 1,609.344 m exactly).
Assumptions
- Every step has the same length. Real steps vary with pace, slope, and tiredness.
- The default step length, 2.5 ft (0.762 m), is a typical adult walking step. Measure your own for a better answer.
- A step is one foot to the other, as a step counter counts it.
Worked examples by hand
10,000 steps at 2.5 ft. 2.5 ft = 2.5 × 0.3048 = 0.762 m. 10,000 × 0.762 m = 7,620 m, which is 7,620 ÷ 1,609.344 = 4.73 miles. Steps per mile: 5,280 ÷ 2.5 = 2,112.
Steps in one mile at 2.5 ft. 1,609.344 m ÷ 0.762 m = 2,112 steps.
Step length for 2,000 steps per mile. 1,609.344 m ÷ 2,000 = 0.804672 m, which is 2.64 ft.
Other questions people ask
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on your step length. A mile is 5,280 feet, so at 2.5 ft per step it is 5,280 ÷ 2.5 = 2,112 steps, and at 2.2 ft per step it is 2,400 steps. The often quoted 2,000 steps per mile is a step of 2.64 ft.
How far is 10,000 steps?
At 2.5 ft per step, 10,000 steps is 25,000 ft, which is 25,000 ÷ 5,280 = 4.73 miles (7.62 km). With a shorter 2.2 ft step it is 4.17 miles.
How do I measure my step length?
Walk 20 normal steps on a flat path, measure the distance from the start line to the heel of your last step, and divide it by 20. Repeat it a few times and take the average.
Is step length the same as stride length?
Not always. A step is one foot to the other; a stride is often used for two steps, back to the same foot. This converter uses one step, which is what a step counter counts.
