Where are the dates on the calendar?
How to calculate
Counts the calendar days between two dates, or the working days without weekends and public holidays, with an option to count the end date.
Example with the default inputs (Start date October 6, 2026, End date November 5, 2026, Count the end date No, Count working days only No) on the example date Monday, October 5, 2026: From October 6, 2026 to November 5, 2026: 30 calendar days.
Method: Count the days from the start date up to the end date (the end date too when asked); for working days, leave out the chosen weekend days and the country’s observed public holidays.
- The start date is counted; the end date is counted only when “Count the end date” is on. So January 1 to January 3 is 2 days, or 3 with the end date.
- When the end date is before the start date, the two dates swap and the count is negative.
- Dates are calendar days with no time of day, so daylight-saving changes cannot add or lose a day.
- Public holidays are the days off as observed (a holiday on a weekend moves to a weekday where the country’s rule says so). Holiday data covers the US from 1986, the UK (England and Wales) from 2019 to 2028, Canada (federal) from 2021, India (central government) from 2023 to 2027, and China from 2015 to 2035.

How it works
Calendar days. Take the start date and the end date as calendar days, with no time of day. The count runs from the start date up to the end date: the start date is counted and the end date is not. So the count is
- days = end date − start date, in whole days, or
- days = end date − start date + 1 when Count the end date is on.
When the end date is before the start date, the two dates swap, the count runs from the earlier date up to the later one by the same rule (the later date counts only when Count the end date is on), and the answer is negative. With the same date twice, the count is 0, or 1 with the end date.
Working days. With Count working days only on, the calculator looks at the same days (the earlier date up to, but not including, the later date; the later date too when Count the end date is on) and counts only the days that are:
- not a Saturday, when Skip Saturdays is on (the default),
- not a Sunday, when Skip Sundays is on (the default), and
- not an observed public holiday of the chosen country, when Skip public holidays is on (the default).
Days skipped = calendar days − working days, without the minus sign (it is the same whichever date comes first).
Public holidays are the days off, after any weekend move:
- United States (from 1986): the federal holidays of 5 U.S.C. 6103(a): New Year’s Day (January 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday of January), Washington’s Birthday (third Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Juneteenth (June 19, from 2021), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (first Monday of September), Columbus Day (second Monday of October), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November), and Christmas Day (December 25). A fixed-date holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after (OPM rule), so New Year’s Day can be observed on December 31.
- United Kingdom (England and Wales, 2019 to 2028): the bank holidays listed by GOV.UK: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May, spring, and summer bank holidays, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day, with substitute days when one falls on a weekend, plus the one-off 2022 and 2023 bank holidays.
- Canada (from 2021): the federal general holidays of the Canada Labour Code: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day (the Monday before May 25), Canada Day (July 1, or July 2 when July 1 is a Sunday), Labour Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), Thanksgiving (second Monday of October), Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day, on their dates. When one of these falls on a weekend, the Canada Labour Code (section 193) gives a federally regulated employee a day off on a nearby working day; this calculator does not move the holiday, so check your employer's schedule for those weeks.
- India (2023 to 2027): Republic Day (January 26), Holi, Independence Day (August 15), Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday (October 2), and Diwali, on the dates in the central government (DoPT) holiday lists.
- China (2015 to 2035): one day each for New Year’s Day, the Spring Festival, the Qingming Festival, Labour Day, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day. The yearly State Council arrangement of extra days off and make-up working weekends is not included.
When a date in the count falls in a year outside the country’s holiday data, there is no answer; turn off Skip public holidays or pick dates inside the covered years.
Other results.
- In weeks: the number of calendar days, without the minus sign, as whole weeks and the days left (364 days is 52 weeks).
- In years, months, and days (also without a sign): from the earlier date, the most whole years, then the most whole months, then the days left, up to the day after the last counted day. A month from a day that the target month does not have ends on that month’s last day (January 31 plus one month is February 28, or 29 in a leap year).
Assumptions
- Dates are calendar days in the Gregorian calendar with no time of day or time zone, so daylight-saving changes cannot add or lose a day.
- The weekend is Saturday and Sunday unless you turn one of them off.
- Dates run from January 1, 1600 to December 31, 2400.
When the data is out of date
The holiday tables end: India after 2027, the UK after 2028, and China after 2035 (US and Canadian holidays come from rules with no end year). From January 1, 2028, the result says “Holiday dates known through 2027 (India), 2028 (UK), 2035 (China)”. When you skip public holidays for a date past a country’s last year, the page gives no answer and a message, not a count that could miss a holiday.
Worked examples by hand
January 1 to December 31, 2026. 2026 has 365 days; December 31 is day 365 and January 1 is day 1, so the difference is 365 − 1 = 364 days, or 365 days with the end date. 364 days is 52 × 7, so 52 weeks. From January 1, 11 whole months reach December 1, and 30 more days reach December 31: 11 months, 30 days. With the end date, the count runs to January 1, 2027: 1 year.
December 31 back to January 1, 2026. The dates swap, the count is 364 days, and the answer is −364 days.
February 1 to March 1, 2024. 2024 is a leap year, so February has 29 days: 29 days, which is 1 month.
Working days in January 2026 (United States). The count covers January 1 to January 30 (January 31 is the end date and is not counted): 30 calendar days. January 2026 starts on a Thursday. The weekdays are January 1 and 2, then four full weeks of Monday to Friday (January 5 to 30), so 2 + 20 = 22 weekdays. The federal holidays in the range are New Year’s Day (Thursday, January 1) and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, January 19), which leaves 22 − 2 = 20 working days. Days skipped: 30 − 20 = 10 (8 weekend days and 2 holidays).
Saturdays only, December 20, 2025 to January 5, 2026. The count covers December 20 to January 4: 16 calendar days. Skipping Saturdays only, and no holidays, the Saturdays in the range are December 20 and 27 and January 3, so 13 working days and 3 days skipped.
Other questions people ask
How do I calculate days between two dates?
Use our calculator above to find the exact number of days between any two dates. Simply enter your start date and end date, and the calculator will show you the precise count. For example, between January 1, 2024 and March 15, 2024 there are 74 days.
How is the calculation performed?
Our calculator uses precise date arithmetic to determine the exact number of days between two dates. We count each day from the start date up to the end date, and you can choose whether to include or exclude the end date in the calculation. For example, between January 1 and January 3, there are 2 days if excluding the end date, or 3 days if including it.
What's the difference between calendar days and working days?
Calendar days include every day (weekends and holidays), while working days exclude weekends and optionally holidays. For example, from Monday to Friday with the end date counted, you get 5 calendar days and 5 working days. From Monday to the following Monday (end date not counted), you get 7 calendar days but only 5 working days, because the weekend is skipped.
How do working days calculations work?
Working days calculations count each day between the dates, excluding weekends (Saturdays and Sundays by default) and public holidays if enabled. For example, if you're calculating working days between January 1 and January 10, the calculator will skip any weekends and holidays that fall within that period, giving you only the business days.
Should I include or exclude the end date?
It depends on your specific needs. Including the end date counts it as a full day, while excluding it doesn't count it. For example, if you're calculating a project that ends on Friday, you might want to include Friday to count it as a working day. For age calculations or periods that end at midnight, you might want to exclude the end date.
What can I use this calculator for?
This calculator is perfect for project timeline calculations, contract period durations, event planning timelines, vacation day calculations, business day counting, age calculations, and investment period tracking.
How accurate is the calculator?
The calculator accounts for leap years and varying month lengths, and counts whole calendar days with no time of day, so daylight-saving changes cannot add or lose a day. It gives exact day counts for business and personal use; check a legal deadline against the rule that sets it, since some rules count the first or last day differently.
Can I exclude holidays from the calculation?
Yes. Turn on working days, keep “Skip public holidays” on, and select your country. The calculator then skips the observed public holidays. For example, if you're calculating working days in the US around Christmas, it will skip Christmas Day and New Year's Day automatically. Holiday data covers the US from 1986, the UK from 2019 to 2028, Canada from 2021, India from 2023 to 2027, and China from 2015 to 2035.
