How to calculate
Computes the tip and the total for a bill at a tip percent, and splits it between people, with an option to round each share up to a whole dollar.
Example with the default inputs (Bill amount $60.00, Tip 18%, Split between 1, Round each share Exact): With a 18% tip on $60.00, the tip is $10.80 and each person pays $70.80.
Method: tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100; total = bill + tip; share = total ÷ people
- The tip is on the amount you enter. To tip on the amount before tax, enter the bill before tax.
- Rounding up: each exact share rounds up to the next whole dollar, so it is never less than the exact share; a share within 0.000000001 of a whole dollar counts as that dollar. The tip then becomes the rounded total minus the bill.
- Everyone pays an equal share.

How it works
- Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100.
- Total = bill + tip.
- Each person pays = total ÷ number of people.
- Tip per person = tip ÷ number of people.
When you round each share up:
- Work out the exact share, total ÷ people.
- Round it up to the next whole dollar, so the share is never less than the exact share. A share that is already a whole number of dollars stays as it is; to absorb float noise, a share within 0.000000001 of a whole dollar counts as that dollar.
- The total becomes the rounded share × people, and the tip becomes that total − the bill.
The last line shows the tip you pay as a percent of the bill: tip ÷ bill × 100. It is not shown when the bill is $0.
Tipping customs differ between countries and between services. The calculator does the arithmetic for the percent you choose; it does not recommend a percent.
Worked examples by hand
An 18% tip on $60, one person. 60 × 18 ÷ 100 = $10.80. The total is 60 + 10.80 = $70.80.
A 20% tip on $85.40, split three ways. The tip is 85.40 × 0.20 = $17.08, and the total is 85.40 + 17.08 = $102.48. Each person pays 102.48 ÷ 3 = $34.16, of which 17.08 ÷ 3 = $5.69 is tip.
The same bill, each share rounded up. $34.16 rounds up to $35. The total is 35 × 3 = $105, so the tip is 105 − 85.40 = $19.60, which is 19.60 ÷ 85.40 × 100 = 22.95% of the bill.
Other questions people ask
How do I work out a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percent and divide by 100. An 18% tip on $60 is 60 × 18 ÷ 100 = $10.80, so the total is $70.80.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
That is your choice. The calculator tips on the amount you enter, so enter the bill before tax if you want to tip on the food and drink only.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. A $85.40 bill with a 20% tip is $102.48; split three ways, that is $34.16 each.
What does rounding each share up do?
Each share is rounded up to the next whole dollar, so nobody needs coins. The extra goes to the tip. In the example above, $34.16 becomes $35, the total becomes $105, and the tip becomes $19.60, or 22.95% of the bill.
Is there a quick way to tip 20% in my head?
Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10%, then double it. For $47.50, 10% is $4.75 and 20% is $9.50.
Why does the tip percent below the result differ from the one I typed?
It only differs when you round up. The line shows the tip you actually pay as a percent of the bill, after the rounding.
