What is my travel time?

Type how far you are going and your average speed. The calculator shows how long the trip takes, with time for stops, and when you arrive.

Your numbers

Units
Total travel time
4 hours, 10 minutes

Traveling 250 mi at 60 mph takes 4 hours, 10 minutes in all (4 hours, 10 minutes moving).

Moving time
4 hours, 10 minutes
Moving time in hoursh
4.17

Total travel time: 4 hours, 10 minutes. Traveling 250 mi at 60 mph takes 4 hours, 10 minutes in all (4 hours, 10 minutes moving).

How to calculate

Works out the travel time for a distance at an average speed, adds time for stops, and gives the arrival time from a departure time.

Example with the default inputs (Distance 250 mi, Average speed 60 mph): Traveling 250 mi at 60 mph takes 4 hours, 10 minutes in all (4 hours, 10 minutes moving).

Method: moving time = distance ÷ average speed; total = moving time (rounded to the minute) + stop minutes; arrival = departure time + total.

  • The average speed is your average while moving, over the whole trip; traffic and speed changes are in it.
  • Moving time is rounded to the nearest minute, half a minute up.
  • The arrival time is in the time zone you leave from; it does not change for time zones or daylight saving time.

How it works

Average speed is total distance ÷ elapsed time, so the time to cover a distance is

moving time = distance ÷ average speed

  • The moving time is rounded to the nearest whole minute (half a minute rounds up; the fraction of a minute is first rounded to 10⁻⁹ minute, so an exact half is not lost to binary rounding), and shown in hours and minutes. It is also shown in decimal hours to 2 decimal places.
  • Total travel time = rounded moving time + stop minutes.
  • Arrival time = departure time + total travel time, on a 24-hour clock that wraps at midnight. The page says whether that is the same day, the next day, or a number of days later (whole days of 24 hours past the departure day).

Rules

  • The distance is more than 0 and at most 100,000 km; the speed is from 1 km/h to 1,000 m/s (3,600 km/h). Units: mi, km, m, ft and nautical miles; mph, km/h, knots, m/s and ft/s.
  • Stops are whole minutes from 0 to 100,000. With no departure time, no arrival time is shown.
  • A moving time under half a minute (which rounds to 0 minutes) gives no answer.
  • The arrival time is in the departure time zone, with no daylight saving change.

Worked examples by hand

250 mi at 60 mph. 250 ÷ 60 = 4.1667 h. 0.1667 × 60 = 10 minutes, so 4 hours 10 minutes.

300 km at 100 km/h, 30 minutes of stops, leaving at 8:15 AM. 300 ÷ 100 = 3 hours. With stops: 3 hours 30 minutes. 8:15 + 3:30 = 11:45 AM, the same day.

1,200 mi at 65 mph, 2 hours of stops, leaving at 8:00 PM. 1,200 ÷ 65 = 18.4615 h = 18 h 27.69 min, rounded to 18 hours 28 minutes. With 120 minutes of stops: 20 hours 28 minutes. 20:00 + 20:28 = 40:28, which is 4:28 PM the next day.

Other questions people ask

How do I calculate travel time?

Divide the distance by the average speed: time = distance ÷ speed. 250 miles at 60 mph takes 250 ÷ 60 = 4.17 hours, which is 4 hours 10 minutes.

How do I turn decimal hours into hours and minutes?

Keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 4.1667 hours is 4 hours and 0.1667 × 60 = 10 minutes.

What average speed should I use for a road trip?

Use your expected average while moving, not the speed limit. Traffic, towns and slow stretches bring the average below the highway speed. Add breaks separately as stop minutes.

How do I work out my arrival time?

Add the total travel time to your departure time. Leaving at 8:15 AM on a 3 hour 30 minute trip, you arrive at 11:45 AM. Past midnight the calculator says you arrive the next day.

Does the arrival time change across time zones?

No. The arrival time is on the clock where you leave. If you cross a time zone, add or subtract the hour yourself.

Can I use kilometers and km/h?

Yes. Pick km for the distance and km/h for the speed, or switch the page to Metric. 300 km at 100 km/h takes 3 hours.
