How to calculate
Computes the monthly payment, total interest, payoff date, and full payment schedule of a fixed-rate loan for the aircraft.
Example with the default inputs (Price of the aircraft $250,000.00, Cash down $37,500.00, Trade-in value $0.00, Interest rate (APR) 7.5%, Loan start date October 19, 2026, Length of loan (months) 240, Sales tax rate 0%, Fees, inspection and registration $0.00, Roll tax and fees into the loan Yes, Extra each month $0.00) on the example date Monday, October 19, 2026: Borrowing $212,500.00 at 7.5% APR over 240 months costs $1,711.89 a month, with $198,352.53 of interest in total.
Method: payment = L × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), with L the amount borrowed, r the APR ÷ 12, and n the number of months; each month, interest = balance × r and the rest of the payment lowers the balance.
- The rate is fixed for the whole loan and interest is charged monthly at APR ÷ 12.
- Payments are made at the end of each month, starting one month after the start date.
- Sales tax is charged on the price minus the trade-in value, as most US states do.
- Extra payments go straight to the balance; the last payment is whatever is left.
- Values are not rounded to the cent between months; only the display is rounded.

How it works
- Taxed price = price − trade-in (never below 0). Sales tax = taxed price × tax rate.
- Amount borrowed L = price − cash down − trade-in, plus the sales tax and fees when they are rolled into the loan (the default). It is never below 0.
- Monthly rate r = APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100. Monthly payment = L × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n) for n months; at 0% it is L ÷ n.
- Each month, interest = balance × r and the rest of the payment lowers the balance. The last payment is whatever is left. Nothing is rounded between months.
- An extra monthly amount goes straight to the balance, so the loan ends sooner; the interest saved is the interest without the extra minus the interest with it.
- Paid up front = cash down, plus tax and fees when they are not rolled in. What the aircraft really costs = price + tax + fees + all the interest.
Rules
- Price, cash down and trade-in from $0 to $100,000,000; APR from 0% to 50%; 1 to 240 months; sales tax 0% to 25%; fees up to $1,000,000.
- The first payment is one month after the start date.
Worked examples by hand
The default: $250,000 aircraft, $37,500 down, 7.5% APR, 240 months. L = 250,000 − 37,500 = $212,500. r = 0.075 ÷ 12. Payment = 212,500 × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−240) = $1,711.89. Interest over the loan = $198,352.53, paid off in October 2046 for a loan that starts in October 2026.
$120,000 aircraft, $24,000 down, $10,000 trade-in, 6% tax, 8.25% over 180 months. Tax = 0.06 × (120,000 − 10,000) = $6,600. L = 120,000 − 24,000 − 10,000 + 6,600 = $92,600. Payment = $898.35; interest $69,102.99.
$60,000 at 0% over 120 months. Payment = 60,000 ÷ 120 = $500; no interest.
Other questions people ask
How is an aircraft loan payment worked out?
It is a level monthly payment: payment = L × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where L is the amount borrowed, r is the APR ÷ 12 and n is the number of months. $212,500 at 7.5% over 240 months is $1,711.89 a month.
How long can an aircraft loan be?
This calculator allows up to 240 months (20 years). Lenders set their own terms by the age and type of aircraft and the amount borrowed; type the term you are offered.
What does the amount borrowed include?
The price minus your cash down and trade-in. Sales tax and fees are added to the loan when "Roll tax and fees into the loan" is on, or paid up front when it is off.
Does a longer loan save money?
No. A longer loan lowers the monthly payment but adds interest. $212,500 at 7.5% costs $198,352.53 of interest over 240 months; over 120 months the payment is $2,522.41 and the interest is $90,189.51.
Can I pay my aircraft loan off early?
Many loans let you prepay without a penalty, but some do not; your contract and state law decide. Use the extra monthly amount to see the interest and months you would save.
How does a trade-in change the sales tax?
Most US states that tax the sale charge it on the price minus the trade-in value, so a $10,000 trade-in on a $120,000 aircraft leaves $110,000 taxed. Check your state’s rule; enter 0% where none applies.
