How to calculate

Computes the coins bought, the sale value, the fees, and the profit or loss and return on a crypto trade, from the amount invested and the buy and sell prices you type.

Example with the default inputs (Amount invested $1,000.00, Buy price per coin $40,000.00, Sell price per coin $60,000.00, Buy fee 0%, Sell fee 0%): $1,000.00 invested at $40,000.00 a coin and sold at $60,000.00 gives $500.00 (50% return).

Method: Coins = invested × (1 − buy fee) ÷ buy price; you get back = coins × sell price × (1 − sell fee); profit = you get back − invested; return = profit ÷ invested × 100.

  • Prices are what you type; nothing is looked up.
  • Each fee is a percent of its trade: the buy fee of the amount invested, the sell fee of the sale value.
  • Taxes and network (withdrawal) fees are not included. This is an estimate, not tax or investment advice.

How the crypto profit is worked out

All money is worked out in exact decimal arithmetic from the numbers as typed; each result becomes a number once, at the end. Fees are percents: an empty fee counts as 0%.

  • Coins bought = amount invested × (1 − buy fee ÷ 100) ÷ buy price. The buy fee is a percent of the amount invested, so the amount invested includes it.
  • Sale value = coins bought × sell price.
  • You get back = sale value × (1 − sell fee ÷ 100). The sell fee is a percent of the sale value.
  • Profit or loss = you get back − amount invested. Negative for a loss.
  • Return = profit ÷ amount invested × 100.
  • Total fees = amount invested × buy fee ÷ 100 + sale value × sell fee ÷ 100.
  • Break-even sell price = buy price ÷ ((1 − buy fee ÷ 100) × (1 − sell fee ÷ 100)).

Limits. The amount invested is above $0 and at most $1 trillion; the buy price is above $0 and the sell price at least $0, both at most $1 billion a coin; each fee is from 0% to 99%.

Display. Money to the cent and the return to 2 decimals, each rounded half up from the exact value; coins to at most 8 decimals.

Assumptions

  • Every price is one you type; nothing is looked up.
  • Each fee is a percent of its trade. Network (withdrawal) fees and spreads are not included.
  • Taxes are not taken out. This is an estimate, not tax or investment advice.

Worked examples by hand

No fees. $1,000 at $40,000 a coin: coins = 1,000 ÷ 40,000 = 0.025. Sale value = 0.025 × 60,000 = $1,500. Profit = 1,500 − 1,000 = $500, a 50% return. Break-even = $40,000.

0.5% fees each way. $2,500 at $2,000 a coin, sold at $2,600. Coins = 2,500 × 0.995 ÷ 2,000 = 1.24375. Sale value = 1.24375 × 2,600 = $3,233.75. You get back 3,233.75 × 0.995 = $3,217.58125, shown as $3,217.58. Profit = $717.58, return 717.58125 ÷ 2,500 = 28.70%. Fees = 12.50 + 16.16875 = $28.67. Break-even = 2,000 ÷ (0.995 × 0.995) = $2,020.15.

A loss with 1.5% fees. $500 at $0.62 a coin, sold at $0.41. Coins = 500 × 0.985 ÷ 0.62 = 794.35483871. Sale value = 794.35483871 × 0.41 = $325.69; you get back 325.685484 × 0.985 = $320.80. Profit = 320.800202 − 500 = −$179.20, a return of −35.84%. Fees = 7.50 + 4.885282 = $12.39.

Other questions people ask

How do I calculate crypto profit?

Work out the coins you bought: the amount invested, minus the buy fee, divided by the buy price. Multiply the coins by the sell price and take off the sell fee: that is what you get back. The profit is that minus the amount invested. $1,000 at $40,000 a coin buys 0.025 coins; at $60,000 they sell for $1,500, a $500 profit.

How do exchange fees change the profit?

A fee on each trade takes a share of the money: a 0.5% buy fee leaves 99.5% of your money to buy coins, and a 0.5% sell fee leaves 99.5% of the sale value. On $2,500 bought at $2,000 and sold at $2,600, the two fees cost $28.67 and the profit is $717.58 instead of $750.

What is the break-even price?

It is the sell price per coin at which you get back exactly what you invested, after both fees: buy price ÷ ((1 − buy fee) × (1 − sell fee)). With 0.5% fees each way, a coin bought at $2,000 has to reach $2,020.15 before you make any profit.

Does this calculator use live crypto prices?

No. Every price is one you type, so the page works offline, never sends your numbers anywhere, and gives the same answer every time. Use the prices from your exchange’s trade history, or a price you expect.

Does it work for any coin?

Yes. Bitcoin, Ether, XRP or any other coin or token works the same way: only the amount, the two prices and the two fees matter. Coins show with up to 8 decimals, the smallest unit of bitcoin.

Is the profit taxable?

In the U.S. the IRS treats digital assets as property, so selling at a gain is usually a taxable capital gain. Your basis is what you spent, including fees. This calculator shows the gain before tax and is not tax advice.
