Start from federal adjusted gross income. Subtract the larger of the Iowa standard deduction and your itemized deductions, then the exemptions. Apply the rates to what is left and subtract any credits. Iowa uses the federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household for 2026). The model takes an exemption credit of $40 ($80 joint), a credit of $40 per dependent.
