How to calculate

Combines your VA disability ratings with the 38 CFR 4.25 table and the bilateral factor, then finds your monthly VA disability compensation for 2026 from your dependents.

Example with the default inputs (Your disability ratings [Rating 50%; Rating 30%], Married No, Dependent parents None, Children under 18 0, Children 18 to 23 in school 0): With a combined rating of 70%, your VA disability pay is $1,808.45 a month.

Method: Combine the ratings largest first with Table I of 38 CFR 4.25 (a + b × (100 − a) ÷ 100, rounded to a whole number), adding the 4.26 bilateral factor first; round the result to the nearest 10 (5 up); then read the monthly rate for that rating and your dependents from VA’s 2026 table.

  • Rates effective December 1, 2025 (VA’s 2026 table).
  • Special monthly compensation (SMC), individual unemployability and temporary ratings are not included.
  • Dependents count only at a combined rating of 30% or more.
  • Each child 18 to 23 in school is paid the school-child amount in place of a child amount (38 U.S.C. 1115(1)(F)).

How it works

Step 1: the combined value (38 CFR 4.25)

Ratings of 0% are left out. Sort the other ratings from largest to smallest. Start with the largest. Combine it with the next one, then combine that result with the next, and so on. Combining a value a with a rating b:

combined = a + b × (100 − a) ÷ 100, rounded to a whole number (a fraction of exactly .5 rounds up).

This formula gives every entry of Table I in 38 CFR 4.25 (all 684 entries checked). The result after the last rating is the combined value before rounding. A rating of 100% makes the combined value 100.

Step 2: the bilateral factor (38 CFR 4.26)

Mark a rating as bilateral when it affects one side of a pair (an arm, a leg, or paired skeletal muscles) and the other side is also rated. When two or more ratings are marked:

  1. Combine the bilateral ratings with each other as in step 1 (largest first).
  2. Add 10% of that value: bilateral value = round(value × 1.1), to a whole number, .5 up, at most 100.
  3. That bilateral value is one rating. Sort it in with the other ratings and combine all of them as in step 1.

Paragraph (d) of 4.26 leaves a bilateral rating out of the factor when that gives a higher combined value. The calculator tries every group of two or more marked ratings (and no group at all), and keeps the highest combined value. When two groups tie, it keeps the larger group. A single marked rating gets no factor.

Step 3: the combined rating

Round the combined value to the nearest multiple of 10. A value ending in 5 rounds up (65 becomes 70; 94 becomes 90; 95 becomes 100).

Step 4: the monthly pay

At 0% the pay is $0. At 10% it is $180.42 and at 20% it is $356.66, with no dependent amounts. From 30%, the pay is:

  • the basic rate from the table below: Alone with no spouse and no child under 18; Spouse with a spouse and no child under 18; 1 child with no spouse and at least one child under 18; Spouse and 1 child with both;
  • plus the parent amount for each dependent parent (0, 1 or 2);
  • plus the extra child amount for each child under 18 beyond the first;
  • plus the school child amount for each child 18 to 23 in school. Under 38 U.S.C. 1115(1)(F), a school child is paid this amount in place of a child amount, so school children never use a "1 child" basic rate;
  • plus the Aid and Attendance amount when you have a spouse who gets Aid and Attendance.

The yearly amount is 12 times the monthly pay. No step is rounded; the amounts are exact to the cent.

Assumptions

  • Rates are VA’s table effective December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026. After that date the page keeps using these rates and says so.
  • Special monthly compensation (SMC), individual unemployability (TDIU), and temporary 100% ratings are not included.
  • A child who became permanently unable to support themselves before 18 counts as a child under 18.
  • VA decides your rating and your pay; this is an estimate.

Worked examples by hand

50% and 30%, married (38 CFR 4.25 example). 50 + 30 × 50 ÷ 100 = 65. Rounded: 70%. The 70% rate with a spouse is $1,961.45 a month.

60%, 40% and 20%, alone (38 CFR 4.25 example). 60 + 40 × 40 ÷ 100 = 76; 76 + 20 × 24 ÷ 100 = 80.8, rounded to 81. Rounded to 10: 80%. Pay: $2,102.15.

60%, 20%, and two bilateral 10% ratings (38 CFR 4.26 example). The pair: 10 + 10 × 90 ÷ 100 = 19; 19 × 1.1 = 20.9, rounded to 21. Order of severity: 60, 21, 20. 60 + 21 × 40 ÷ 100 = 68.4, rounded to 68; 68 + 20 × 32 ÷ 100 = 74.4, rounded to 74. Rounded to 10: 70%.

70% with a spouse on Aid and Attendance and 3 children under 18 (VA rates page example). $2,074.45 (spouse and 1 child) + 2 × $76.00 (two extra children) + $141.00 = $2,367.45.

30% with a spouse (VA rates page example). $617.47.

100% with two children 18 to 23 in school, no spouse. $3,938.58 + 2 × $352.45 = $4,643.48 a month, $55,721.76 a year.

Other questions people ask

How does VA combine disability ratings?

VA does not add ratings. It takes the largest rating first and treats the rest of you as "efficient". A 50% rating leaves 50% efficiency; a 30% rating then takes 30% of that 50%, which is 15. So 50% and 30% combine to 65%, and VA rounds 65 to 70%.

What is the bilateral factor?

When disabilities affect both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, VA combines those ratings first and adds 10% of the result. Two 10% ratings combine to 19, and 10% of 19 is 1.9, so the pair counts as 21 before the other ratings are combined.

How much is 100% VA disability in 2026?

From December 1, 2025, a Veteran rated 100% with no dependents gets $3,938.58 a month. With a spouse it is $4,158.17, and with a spouse and one child under 18 it is $4,318.99.

Do dependents raise my pay at 10% or 20%?

No. VA pays added amounts for a spouse, children and parents only at a combined rating of 30% or more. At 10% the 2026 rate is $180.42 and at 20% it is $356.66, with or without dependents.

When do VA rates change?

Each December 1, by the same percentage as the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment. The rates here took effect on December 1, 2025, with a 2.8% increase.
