How to calculate
Works out a 5e character’s hit point maximum from the class, level and Constitution score, with the fixed-value total, the lowest, highest and average totals when rolling, and the hit dice.
Example with the default inputs (Class Fighter (d10), Level 5, Constitution score 14, Extra hit points per level 0): A level 5 character with 5d10 hit dice and a +2 Constitution modifier has 44 hit points.
Method: HP = max(1, die + CON mod) + extra at 1st level, plus max(1, fixed value + CON mod) + extra for each later level; fixed value = die ÷ 2 + 1; CON mod = ⌊(score − 10) ÷ 2⌋.
- One class from 1st level (no multiclassing). Hit dice: barbarian d12; fighter, paladin and ranger d10; bard, cleric, druid, monk, rogue and warlock d8; sorcerer and wizard d6.
- Each level adds at least 1 hit point before the per-level bonus, even with a very low Constitution. The SRD sets no floor; this page uses one so a level never lowers the maximum.
- The Constitution modifier counts at every level, as if the current score had applied from 1st level.

How it works
Hit dice by class (SRD 5.1): barbarian d12; fighter, paladin and ranger d10; bard, cleric, druid, monk, rogue and warlock d8; sorcerer and wizard d6. For a hit die with D sides:
- Constitution modifier: m = ⌊(score − 10) ÷ 2⌋.
- Fixed value: D ÷ 2 + 1 (4, 5, 6 or 7).
- A level’s hit points from a die value v: max(1, v + m) + extra, where extra is the per-level bonus. The max(1, …) floor is this page’s rule, not the SRD’s.
- 1st level: the die’s maximum, so max(1, D + m) + extra.
- Hit point maximum (fixed value): 1st level + (level − 1) × (max(1, fixed value + m) + extra).
- Lowest when rolling: every later roll is 1: 1st level + (level − 1) × (max(1, 1 + m) + extra).
- Highest when rolling: every later roll is D: 1st level + (level − 1) × (max(1, D + m) + extra).
- Average when rolling: 1st level + (level − 1) × (E + extra), where E is the mean of max(1, r + m) over r = 1, 2, …, D.
- Hit dice: the level, then "d" and D, such as 5d10. Hit points per later level is max(1, fixed value + m) + extra.
Rules
- Level from 1 to 20; Constitution score from 1 to 30; extra hit points per level from 0 to 10, whole numbers.
- One class from 1st level; multiclassing is not covered.
- The modifier is written with its sign: +2, 0, or −1 (a true minus sign).
Output format. Hit points are whole numbers; the average shows 1 decimal.
Worked examples by hand
Fighter 5, Constitution 14. m = ⌊4 ÷ 2⌋ = +2. 1st level 10 + 2 = 12. Later levels 4 × (6 + 2) = 32. Maximum 44. Rolling: lowest 12 + 4 × (1 + 2) = 24, highest 12 + 4 × 12 = 60, average 12 + 4 × 7.5 = 42. Hit dice 5d10.
Barbarian 1, Constitution 16. 12 + 3 = 15, whether you roll or not.
Wizard 3, Constitution 8, hill dwarf (+1 a level). m = −1. 1st level (6 − 1) + 1 = 6. Each later level (4 − 1) + 1 = 4. Maximum 6 + 2 × 4 = 14.
Sorcerer 2, Constitution 1. m = −5. 1st level max(1, 6 − 5) = 1; 2nd level max(1, 4 − 5) = 1. Maximum 2.
Other questions people ask
How do I calculate hit points in 5e?
At 1st level take the highest roll of your class’s hit die plus your Constitution modifier. At each later level add one roll of the hit die (or its fixed value) plus your Constitution modifier. A 5th-level fighter with Constitution 14 has 10 + 2 = 12, then 4 × (6 + 2) = 32, for 44 hit points.
What is the fixed value of each hit die?
The average roll rounded up: 4 for a d6, 5 for a d8, 6 for a d10 and 7 for a d12. It is half the die plus 1.
How do I get the Constitution modifier?
Subtract 10 from the score, divide by 2 and round down. A score of 14 gives +2, 10 gives 0, 8 gives −1 and 1 gives −5.
Should I roll or take the fixed value?
The fixed value is a little above the average roll, so over many levels it gives more hit points on average and no bad luck. Rolling can give more or less; the page shows the range and the average.
What does a hill dwarf or a draconic sorcerer add?
Both add 1 hit point at every level (Dwarven Toughness and Draconic Resilience in the SRD). Type 1 in "Extra hit points per level".
Can a level give 0 or fewer hit points?
With a very low Constitution, the fixed value plus the modifier can be 0 or less (a d6 with −5). The SRD gives no floor, but this page counts at least 1 hit point for each level, before any per-level bonus.
