What is my DOTS score?

Type your total, bodyweight and sex. The DOTS calculator gives your DOTS score, the bodyweight-adjusted points that powerlifting meets use to compare lifters across weight classes, from the coefficients Tim Konertz published.

How to calculate

Computes the DOTS powerlifting score from your total, bodyweight and sex, with Tim Konertz’s coefficients, so lifters of different bodyweights can be compared.

Example with the default inputs (Sex Male, Bodyweight 198 lb, Total lifted 1,300 lb): Your DOTS score is 381.68.

Method: DOTS = total (kg) × 500 ÷ (A w⁴ + B w³ + C w² + D w + E), w the bodyweight in kg held to 40–210 (men) or 40–150 (women).

  • Men: A = −0.0000010930, B = 0.0007391293, C = −0.1918759221, D = 24.0900756, E = −307.75076.
  • Women: A = −0.0000010706, B = 0.0005158568, C = −0.1126655495, D = 13.6175032, E = −57.96288.
  • Pounds are converted with 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly.

How it works

Convert to kilograms (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg). Let w be the bodyweight held to 40–210 kg for men or 40–150 kg for women: below 40 use 40, above the upper limit use the limit.

  • Polynomial P(w) = A w⁴ + B w³ + C w² + D w + E
  • DOTS coefficient = 500 ÷ P(w)
  • DOTS score = total (kg) × DOTS coefficient

Rules

  • Bodyweight is above 0 and at most 500 kg; the total is above 0 and at most 2,000 kg.

Output format. The score with up to 2 decimals; the coefficient to 6 significant digits; the bodyweight used and the total in kilograms.

Worked examples by hand

Man, 74 kg, 100 kg lifted. P(74) = −0.0000010930 × 74⁴ + 0.0007391293 × 74³ − 0.1918759221 × 74² + 24.0900756 × 74 − 307.75076 = 690.94. Coefficient 500 ÷ 690.94 = 0.723652; score 100 × 0.723652 = 72.37 (Wikipedia: 72.365).

Man, 120 kg, 125 kg lifted. Coefficient 0.574306; score 71.79 (Wikipedia: 71.788).

Woman, 60 kg, 400 kg total. P(60) = 451.04, coefficient 500 ÷ 451.04 = 1.108546, score 443.42.

Woman, 35 kg, 300 kg total. 35 kg is below 40 kg, so w = 40: coefficient 1.484797, score 445.44.

Man, 198 lb, 1,300 lb total. 198 lb = 89.811289 kg and 1,300 lb = 589.670081 kg. Coefficient 0.647286, score 381.68.

Other questions people ask

What is a DOTS score?

A powerlifting score that adjusts a total for bodyweight, so a light and a heavy lifter can be compared. Tim Konertz built it for the German federation (BVDK); the BVDK has used it for team scoring since 2020, and meets use it for best-lifter rankings.

How is the DOTS score calculated?

Multiply the total in kilograms by 500 and divide by a fourth-degree polynomial of bodyweight: DOTS = total × 500 ÷ (A w⁴ + B w³ + C w² + D w + E). Men and women have their own coefficients A to E.

What is a good DOTS score?

There is no official scale. Because DOTS removes most of the effect of bodyweight, a higher score simply means a stronger total for your size. Compare your score with lifters at your level, for example the DOTS listed with meet results.

What happens below 40 kg or at very high bodyweights?

The formula is defined for 40–210 kg for men and 40–150 kg for women. Outside that range, the author uses the coefficient at the nearest limit, so a 35 kg lifter is scored as if she weighed 40 kg.

Can I use pounds?

Yes. Type your bodyweight and total in pounds; the calculator converts them to kilograms (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg) before using the formula, which is written for kilograms.

Can I use DOTS for one lift?

Yes, the same coefficient works for a single lift, such as a bench press only meet. The Wikipedia example scores bench presses: 100 kg at 74 kg bodyweight gives 72.365 points.
