What is the concrete weight?

Pick the shape, type its size, and choose the concrete density. The concrete weight calculator gives the weight in pounds or kilograms, in tons and tonnes, and the volume.

How to calculate

Concrete weight calculator: the weight of a concrete slab, block, footing, column or a typed volume, from its size and the density of normal concrete (150 lb/ft³ or 2,400 kg/m³) or your own.

Example with the default inputs (Shape Slab, block or footing, Length 10 ft, Width 10 ft, Thickness 0.333333333333333 ft, How many 1, Concrete Normal concrete, 150 lb/ft³): The concrete weighs 5,000 lb (2.5 short tons).

Method: Weight = volume × density. Slab: length × width × thickness; column: π ÷ 4 × diameter² × height; times how many.

  • Normal concrete weighs 140 to 150 lb/ft³ (2,240 to 2,400 kg/m³); the calculator offers 150 and 140 lb/ft³ and 2,400 kg/m³, or your own density.
  • Reinforcing steel and the water in fresh concrete add a little weight; type a density to include them.

How it works

Weight = volume × density, where the volume is one piece × how many:

  • Slab, block or footing: length × width × thickness.
  • Round column or pier: π ÷ 4 × diameter² × height.
  • I know the volume: the volume you type (cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic metres or litres).

Densities. Normal concrete 150 lb/ft³ (2,402.77 kg/m³); normal concrete 2,400 kg/m³; the light end of the normal range, 140 lb/ft³ (2,242.58 kg/m³); or a density you type (100 to 10,000 kg/m³).

The calculator also shows the weight in short tons (÷ 2,000 lb) and tonnes (÷ 1,000 kg), and the volume in cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic metres.

Rules

  • Lengths are more than 0 and at most 1,000 m; a typed volume more than 0 and at most 1,000,000 m³; how many is 1 to 100,000. 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly.
  • A size that gives a weight of 0 or past the floating-point range has no answer.

Output format

The weight shows to 5 significant figures in pounds (US) or kilograms (Metric); tons, tonnes, cubic yards and cubic metres to 3 decimals; cubic feet to 2. Typed values are read back as exact decimals, so a slab’s weight is exact (a column uses π in floating point), and each value is rounded half up once.

Worked examples by hand

A 10 × 10 ft slab, 4 in thick, at 150 lb/ft³. Volume = 10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.333 ft³. Weight = 33.333 × 150 = 5,000 lb = 2.5 tons (2,267.96 kg).

One cubic metre at 2,400 kg/m³. 1 × 2,400 = 2,400 kg = 2.4 tonnes.

One cubic yard at 150 lb/ft³. 27 ft³ × 150 = 4,050 lb = 2.025 tons.

Four piers 1 ft across and 8 ft tall at 140 lb/ft³. One pier: π ÷ 4 × 1² × 8 = 6.2832 ft³. Four: 25.133 ft³ × 140 = 3,518.6 lb.

Other questions people ask

How much does concrete weigh?

Normal concrete weighs about 140 to 150 lb per cubic foot (2,240 to 2,400 kg/m³). At 150 lb/ft³, a cubic yard (27 ft³) weighs 4,050 lb, a little over 2 tons.

How do I calculate the weight of a concrete slab?

Multiply length × width × thickness, all in feet, to get cubic feet, then multiply by the density. A 10 × 10 ft slab 4 in thick is 10 × 10 × 4 ÷ 12 = 33.33 ft³, and at 150 lb/ft³ it weighs 5,000 lb.

How much does a cubic metre of concrete weigh?

About 2,400 kg (2.4 tonnes) for normal concrete, or 2,240 kg at the light end of the normal range.

How much does a concrete column weigh?

Use the cylinder volume, π ÷ 4 × diameter² × height. A pier 1 ft across and 8 ft tall holds 6.28 ft³ and weighs about 942 lb at 150 lb/ft³.

Does rebar or wet concrete change the weight?

A little. Steel reinforcing and the water in fresh concrete add weight. If you know the density of your mix, choose Other and type it.

How many tons is a yard of concrete?

4,050 lb at 150 lb/ft³, which is 2.025 short tons of 2,000 lb.
