How many square yards?
Pick a shape and type its sizes in feet, yards, inches or metres. The square yard calculator gives the area in square yards, square feet and square metres, and the cost at a price per square yard.
- Square yards
- 20 yd²
The area is 20 yd² (180 ft²).
- Square feet
- 180 ft²
- Square metres
- 16.72 m²
Square yards: 20 yd². The area is 20 yd² (180 ft²).
How to calculate
Square yard calculator: the area of a rectangle, circle, triangle or trapezoid in square yards, square feet and square metres, with the cost at a price per square yard, as carpet and sod are sold.
Example with the default inputs (Shape Rectangle or square, Length 12 ft, Width 15 ft, How many 1): The area is 20 yd² (180 ft²).
Method: square yards = area of the shape × how many ÷ 9 ft²; cost = square yards × the price per square yard
- Rectangle: length × width. Circle: π × diameter² ÷ 4. Triangle: base × height ÷ 2. Trapezoid: (top + bottom) ÷ 2 × height.
- The area is the flat area. It adds nothing for waste or seams.
Worked examples
Each example is checked against the calculator on every build.
- Shape Rectangle or square, Length 12 ft, Width 15 ft, How many 1, Price per square yard $25.00 gives Square yards 20 yd², Cost $500.00.Source: NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B: 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 yd = 0.9144 m exactly, so 1 yd² = 9 ft² = 0.83612736 m², https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811 (retrieved 2026-10-03)
- Shape Rectangle or square, Length 13.12 ft, Width 16.4 ft, How many 1 gives Square yards 23.92 yd².Source: NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B: 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 yd = 0.9144 m exactly, so 1 yd² = 9 ft² = 0.83612736 m², https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811 (retrieved 2026-10-03)
- Shape Trapezoid, Top side 6 ft, Bottom side 10 ft, Height 9 ft, How many 1, Price per square yard $30.00 gives Square yards 8 yd², Cost $240.00.Source: NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B: 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 yd = 0.9144 m exactly, so 1 yd² = 9 ft² = 0.83612736 m², https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811 (retrieved 2026-10-03)
- Shape Circle, Diameter 9 ft, How many 1 gives Square yards 7.07 yd².Source: NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B: 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 yd = 0.9144 m exactly, so 1 yd² = 9 ft² = 0.83612736 m², https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811 (retrieved 2026-10-03)
How it works
This is the square footage calculator, headed by square yards. The area of one shape:
- Rectangle or square: length × width.
- Circle: π × diameter² ÷ 4.
- Triangle: base × height ÷ 2, with the height at right angles to the base.
- Trapezoid: (top side + bottom side) ÷ 2 × height.
Then the total area = one shape × how many, shown as:
- Square yards = total area ÷ 0.83612736 m² (9 ft²).
- Square feet = total area ÷ 0.09290304 m².
- Square metres = the total area.
- Cost = square yards × the price per square yard, when you type a price.
Rules
Each length is more than 0 and at most 100 km; how many is 1 to 100,000. An area that rounds to 0 or passes the floating-point range has no answer.
Output format
Areas show to 2 decimals; in Metric the headline shows square metres. The cost shows in dollars and cents. Typed lengths are read back as the exact decimals you typed and the area is worked exactly (π for a circle in floating point), then rounded half up once.
Worked examples by hand
A 12 × 15 ft room at $25 a square yard. 12 × 15 = 180 ft²; 180 ÷ 9 = 20 yd²; 20 × $25 = $500.
A 4 × 5 m room. 20 m² ÷ 0.83612736 = 23.92 yd² (215.28 ft²).
A trapezoid with sides 6 and 10 ft, 9 ft apart, at $30 a square yard. (6 + 10) ÷ 2 × 9 = 72 ft² = 8 yd²; 8 × $30 = $240.
A circle 3 yd across. π × 3² ÷ 4 = 7.0686 yd².
Other questions people ask
How do I calculate square yards?
Multiply the length by the width in feet to get square feet, then divide by 9. A 12 × 15 ft room is 180 ft², which is 180 ÷ 9 = 20 square yards.
How many square feet are in a square yard?
Nine. A yard is 3 ft, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 ft². It is also 0.83612736 m² exactly.
How do I convert square metres to square yards?
Divide by 0.83612736, or multiply by about 1.196. A 4 × 5 m room is 20 m², or 23.92 square yards.
Why is carpet sold by the square yard?
In the US, carpet and sod are often priced per square yard. Multiply the square yards by the price: 20 yd² at $25 is $500. Carpet comes on 12 or 15 ft rolls, so you may need more than the room’s area; the carpet calculator counts that.
How do I find the square yards of a round area?
Use π × diameter² ÷ 4. A circle 3 yd across (9 ft) is π × 9 ÷ 4 = 7.07 square yards.
