What is it in military time?

Pick what you want to do. The military time calculator converts a clock time to military time (2:30 p.m. is 1430) and back, adds or subtracts hours and minutes across midnight, and counts the hours and minutes between two military times.

Your numbers

Answer
1430

2:30 p.m. is 1430 in military time.

Military time
1430
Standard time
2:30 p.m.
In words
2:30 p.m. is 1430 in military time.

Answer: 1430. 2:30 p.m. is 1430 in military time.

How to calculate

Converts between 12-hour a.m./p.m. time and military (24-hour) time, adds or subtracts hours and minutes, and finds the time between two military times.

Example with the default inputs (I want to Convert standard time to military time, Standard time 14:30): 2:30 p.m. is 1430 in military time.

Method: Military time = HHMM of the 24-hour clock; adding works in minutes after midnight, modulo 1,440, counting the days passed; an end time before the start is the next day.

  • Times are whole minutes. 0000 is midnight at the start of a day and 2400 midnight at its end; 2400 is accepted as an end time and when converting.
  • 12:00 a.m. is midnight and 12:00 p.m. is noon; the page adds the words, because NIST calls the a.m./p.m. labels ambiguous.
  • No time zones or daylight saving time changes.

How it works

Times are whole minutes after midnight, t = 60 × hours + minutes, from 0 (0000) to 1,439 (2359); 2400 is 1,440.

  • To military time: write the hour (0 to 23) and the minutes as two digits each, with no colon: 2:30 p.m. is 14:30, so 1430.
  • To standard time: hours 1 to 11 are a.m.; 0 is 12 a.m.; 12 is 12 p.m.; 13 to 23 are p.m. after subtracting 12. 0000 reads “12:00 a.m. (midnight)”, 1200 “12:00 p.m. (noon)” and 2400 “12:00 a.m. (midnight, end of the day)”.
  • Add or subtract: T = t + 60 × hours + minutes. The days passed are ⌊T ÷ 1,440⌋ and the time is T − 1,440 × days, always from 0000 to 2359. The day reads “the same day”, “the next day”, “the day before”, or “N days later / earlier”.
  • Time between: end − start when the end is not earlier, otherwise end + 1,440 − start (the end is the next day). The result is in hours and minutes, total minutes, and decimal hours (minutes ÷ 60); the day reads “the same day” or “the next day” for the end time.

Python’s datetime and timedelta give the same results.

Rules

  • A military time is 1 or 2 digits of hour, an optional colon, and 2 digits of minutes: 1430, 14:30 and 930 are read; the hour must be 0 to 23 and the minutes 0 to 59, or no answer. 2400 is allowed when converting to standard time and as an end time.
  • Hours to add are whole numbers from −1,000,000 to 1,000,000; minutes from −60,000,000 to 60,000,000.
  • No time zones and no daylight saving time.

Output format. Military times as four digits (0215). Standard times as “2:15 a.m.” with lower-case a.m. and p.m. Spans as “8 hours 30 minutes” (“1 hour”, “1 minute” in the singular); decimal hours with up to 4 decimals.

Worked examples by hand

2:30 p.m. 2 + 12 = 14, so 1430. 12:05 a.m. The 12 becomes 00: 0005.

1745 plus 8 hours 30 minutes. 17:45 + 8:30 = 25:75 = 26:15. That is past 24:00, so subtract 24 hours: 0215, the next day (2:15 a.m.).

0630 minus 10 hours. 6:30 − 10:00 = −3:30. Add 24 hours: 2030, the day before (8:30 p.m.).

From 1745 to 0215. 0215 is earlier, so the end is the next day: (24:00 − 17:45) + 2:15 = 6:15 + 2:15 = 8 hours 30 minutes, 510 minutes or 8.5 hours.

Other questions people ask

How do I convert to military time?

For a.m. times, write the hour with a leading zero: 9:15 a.m. is 0915. For p.m. times, add 12 to the hour: 2:30 p.m. is 1430. The two exceptions are 12:xx a.m., which becomes 00xx (12:05 a.m. is 0005), and 12:xx p.m., which stays 12xx.

How do I convert military time to standard time?

For 0100 to 1159, add a.m. (0945 is 9:45 a.m.). For 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 hours and add p.m. (1745 is 5:45 p.m.). 1200 to 1259 is 12:xx p.m., and 0000 to 0059 is 12:xx a.m.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Both are used. 0000 is midnight at the start of a day and 2400 is midnight at its end, which is the NIST suggestion for avoiding the ambiguous “12 a.m.”. Military time today normally runs from 0000 to 2359.

How do I add hours to military time?

Add the hours and minutes, carrying 60 minutes to an hour; if the total passes 2400, subtract 24 hours and the result is on the next day. 1745 plus 8 hours 30 minutes is 2615, so 0215 the next day.

How do I find the hours between two military times?

Subtract the start from the end in hours and minutes. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift runs past midnight: add 24 hours first. 1745 to 0215 is (2400 − 1745) + 0215 = 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 hours.

How do you say military time?

Say the four digits as hours and minutes: 1430 is “fourteen thirty”, 0900 is “zero nine hundred”, and 1000 is “ten hundred”, never “one thousand”. Some people add “hours” at the end.
