How to calculate
Counts the minutes from one time to another, on the same day or on different dates, also as days, hours, and minutes, as decimal hours, and as seconds.
Example with the default inputs (Start date September 30, 2026, Start time 09:00, End date September 30, 2026, End time 17:30) on the example date Wednesday, September 30, 2026: From 9:00 AM on September 30, 2026 to 5:30 PM on September 30, 2026 is 510 minutes.
Method: minutes = (end date − start date) × 1,440 + end time in minutes − start time in minutes
- Times are wall-clock times with no time zone, and every day has 24 hours: a daylight-saving change is not counted.
- Times are whole minutes; the result counts the minutes from the start up to the end.
- The dates are today unless you change them; the page reads today’s date from your device when it loads.
- An end before the start has no answer.

How it works
Each end of the period is a date and a wall-clock time in whole minutes (HH:MM), with no time zone. Every day counts as 24 hours, so a daylight-saving change is not counted. Dates from January 1, 1600 to December 31, 2400 are accepted.
- Minutes = (end date − start date, in days) × 1,440 + (end hours × 60 + end minutes) − (start hours × 60 + start minutes).
- In days, hours, and minutes: days = minutes ÷ 1,440 rounded down; of the rest, hours = rest ÷ 60 rounded down, and the minutes left. For 0 minutes this row is empty.
- In hours = minutes ÷ 60, shown to 2 decimal places.
- Seconds = minutes × 60.
When the end is before the start, there is no answer.
Both dates start as today, so on first load the page counts the minutes between two times on the same day. The page was built on one day and may be opened on another; the dates change to your today when it loads, and with both dates the same the answer does not change.
Worked examples by hand
9:00 AM to 5:30 PM on the same day. 9:00 is 9 × 60 = 540 minutes after midnight and 5:30 PM (17:30) is 17 × 60 + 30 = 1,050. 1,050 − 540 = 510 minutes, which is 8 hours and 30 minutes, 8.5 hours, or 510 × 60 = 30,600 seconds.
11:40 PM on September 30 to 1:05 AM on October 1, 2026. The dates are 1 day apart: 1 × 1,440 + 65 − 1,420 = 85 minutes, or 1 hour and 25 minutes (1.42 hours).
Midnight on January 1 to noon on January 8, 2026. 7 × 1,440 + 720 − 0 = 10,800 minutes: 7 days and 12 hours, 180 hours, 648,000 seconds.

How do I count the minutes between two times?
Turn each time into minutes after midnight (hours × 60 + minutes) and subtract. From 9:00 AM (540) to 5:30 PM (1,050) is 1,050 − 540 = 510 minutes.
How do I count minutes past midnight?
Set the end date to the next day. From 11:40 PM on September 30 to 1:05 AM on October 1 is 1,440 − 1,420 + 65 = 85 minutes: 20 minutes to midnight, then 65 minutes.
How many minutes are in a day, a week, and a year?
A day has 24 × 60 = 1,440 minutes, a week 10,080 minutes, a 365-day year 525,600 minutes, and a 366-day year 527,040 minutes.
How do I turn minutes into hours?
Divide by 60. 510 minutes is 8.5 hours, or 8 hours and 30 minutes. For hours with a decimal point on a timesheet, use the “In hours” result.
Does daylight saving time change the answer?
No. The calculator counts every day as 24 hours, as a clock on the wall reads. On the night the clocks change, a real period is one hour shorter or longer than shown.
What if the end is before the start?
There is no answer. Check that the end date is not before the start date, and that on the same date the end time is not before the start time.
