Where are the dates on the calendar?
How to calculate
Counts the days sober from a sobriety date up to today, also as weeks and as years, months and days, with the next recovery milestone and the money not spent.
Example with the default inputs (Sobriety date June 24, 2026, Count up to October 2, 2026) on the example date Friday, October 2, 2026: 100 days sober since June 24, 2026.
Method: days sober = count date − sobriety date, in whole calendar days; the next milestone is the first of 30, 60, 90 days, 6, 9 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2, 3, … years after the sobriety date that falls on or after the count date.
- Dates are whole calendar days in the Gregorian calendar, with no time of day.
- The sobriety date is day 0: the day after it is 1 day sober.
- Month and year milestones add calendar months; a day past the end of a month moves to its last day (a February 29 date reaches 1 year on February 28).
- The count date is today unless you change it; the page reads today’s date from your device when it loads.
- Money not spent is the weekly spend × days ÷ 7, at the same weekly spend throughout.

How it works
days sober = count date − sobriety date, in whole calendar days.
- The sobriety date is day 0, and the count date is today unless you change it. The page reads today’s date from your device when it loads.
- Dates are whole days in the Gregorian calendar, with no time of day, so a daylight-saving change cannot add or lose a day.
- In weeks: the days as whole weeks and the days left (272 days = 38 weeks 6 days).
- In years, months, and days: the most whole years Y with sobriety date + Y years on or before the count date, then the most whole months, then the days left.
Milestones
The milestones, in order, are 30 days, 60 days and 90 days (that many days after the sobriety date), then 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, and so on to 100 years (that many calendar months after it). Adding months keeps the day of the month; a day past the end of the target month moves to its last day (January 31 + 6 months = July 31; March 31 + 6 months = September 30; February 29 + 12 months = February 28 in a common year).
- Next milestone and its date: the first milestone whose date is on or after the count date. On the milestone day itself, it is that milestone, with 0 days to go.
- Days to the next milestone: next milestone date − count date.
- Last milestone reached: the milestone just before the next one; none before 30 days.
Money not spent
money not spent = weekly spend × days sober ÷ 7, shown in dollars and cents, rounded half up. It is left out when no weekly spend is given.
Rules
- Dates run from January 1, 1900 to December 31, 2400.
- A sobriety date after the count date has no answer.
- A count past the 100-year milestone has no answer.
Worked examples by hand
Sober since January 1, 2026, counted on September 30, 2026, at $70 a week. January has 31 days, so January 1 to February 1 is 31 days. Adding February (28), March (31), April (30), May (31), June (30), July (31) and August (31) reaches September 1 at 243 days, and September 30 is 29 more: 272 days, or 38 weeks 6 days, or 8 months 29 days. The milestones fall on January 31 (30 days), March 2 (60), April 1 (90), July 1 (6 months) and October 1 (9 months). October 1 is the first on or after September 30, so the next milestone is 9 months, 1 day away, and the last reached is 6 months. Money not spent: 70 × 272 ÷ 7 = $2,720.
Sober since July 2, 2026, counted on September 30, 2026. July 2 to July 31 is 29 days, August adds 31 (60, on August 31) and September 30 more: 90 days. September 30 is the 90-day milestone, so the next milestone is 90 days, 0 days away, and the last reached is 60 days.
Sober since February 29, 2024, counted on March 1, 2026. February 29, 2024 to February 28, 2025 is 365 days, to February 28, 2026 is 365 more, and March 1 is 1 more: 731 days. The 2-year milestone is February 28, 2026 (no February 29 in 2026), so the last reached is 2 years and the next is 3 years, on February 28, 2027.
The same day. A sobriety date of September 30, 2026, counted on September 30, 2026, is 0 days; the next milestone is 30 days, on October 30, 2026.
Other questions people ask
How do I count my days sober?
Count the calendar days from your sobriety date to today. The sobriety date is day 0, so the day after it is 1 day sober. From January 1 to September 30, 2026 is 272 days.
What is a sobriety date?
It is your first full day without alcohol or drugs. Many recovery groups use it to count time and to mark milestones; if you are not sure which day to use, pick the first day you did not drink or use at all.
Which milestones does the calculator show?
30, 60 and 90 days, 6 and 9 months, 1 year, 18 months, and then every year (2 years, 3 years, and so on up to 100). Many recovery groups mark these dates with a chip or a token.
How are month and year milestones dated?
By adding calendar months to the sobriety date. 6 months after March 15 is September 15. A date past the end of the month moves to its last day: 6 months after March 31 is September 30, and 1 year after February 29 is February 28.
Does a leap year change the count?
The day count includes every February 29 in between, so a year sober is 365 or 366 days. The 1-year milestone is the same calendar date a year later.
How is the money not spent worked out?
Type what you used to spend in a week. The calculator multiplies it by your days sober and divides by 7. At $70 a week, 272 days is $2,720.
Can I count up to a date that is not today?
Yes. Change the "Count up to" date to see your time sober on a coming date, such as an anniversary or a meeting. A count date before the sobriety date has no answer.
