What is my class grade?

Enter each grade with its weight. Leave a grade empty for work not graded yet, and add the grade you want to see what you need on the rest.

How to calculate

Computes a course grade as the weighted average of graded work, its letter grade, and the grade needed on the work still to come to reach a target.

Example with the default inputs (Grade 1 92%, Weight 1 20, Grade 2 85%, Weight 2 20, Grade 3 78%, Weight 3 25, Weight 4 35, Grade you want 85%): Your grade so far is 84.46% (B).

Method: grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) over the graded rows; needed = (target × (graded weight + remaining weight) − Σ(grade × weight)) ÷ remaining weight.

  • Weights are relative: percents of the course or points possible give the same average, and they do not need to add up to 100.
  • A row with a weight and no grade is work not graded yet; its weight is the weight still to come.
  • Letter grades follow the Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY) scale: A 93 and up, A- 90 to below 93, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D+ 67, D 63, D- 60, F below 60.
  • Grades above 100% (extra credit) are allowed and count as an A.

How it works

Each row is one assignment or one category of the course (homework, quizzes, exams) with a grade in percent and a weight. The weight is how much the row counts: a percent of the course, or the points it was worth.

Grade so far. Only rows with both a grade and a weight count:

grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

Grade needed on the rest. A row with a weight and no grade is work not graded yet. Its weight is the weight still to come. With the grade you want (the target):

needed = (target × (graded weight + weight still to come) − Σ(grade × weight)) ÷ weight still to come

The needed grade is the average you need across all the work not graded yet. Above 100% means extra credit is needed; 0% or below means the target is already secured.

Letter grade. The grade so far gets a letter on the Tompkins Cortland Community College scale. A grade belongs to a letter when it is at or above the letter's lower limit and below the next letter's lower limit, so 92.99% is an A- and 93% is an A.

  • A: 93 and up
  • A-: 90 to below 93
  • B+: 87 to below 90
  • B: 83 to below 87
  • B-: 80 to below 83
  • C+: 77 to below 80
  • C: 73 to below 77
  • C-: 70 to below 73
  • D+: 67 to below 70
  • D: 63 to below 67
  • D-: 60 to below 63
  • F: below 60

Assumptions

  • With no row that has both a grade and a weight there is no answer, even with a target and weights still to come.
  • Weights are relative. They do not need to add up to 100, and percent weights and point weights give the same answer.
  • A grade with no weight gives no answer, because it cannot be placed in the average.
  • Grades from 0% to 200% are accepted, so extra credit above 100% counts (and is an A).
  • A weight must be at least 0.01 and at most 100,000.

Worked examples by hand

Homework, quizzes, a midterm, and a final still to come. Homework 92% (weight 20), quizzes 85% (20), midterm 78% (25), final exam not taken (35), and you want 85%.

  • Points so far: 92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25 = 1,840 + 1,700 + 1,950 = 5,490.
  • Graded weight: 20 + 20 + 25 = 65. Grade so far: 5,490 ÷ 65 = 84.46%, a B.
  • Needed on the final: (85 × (65 + 35) − 5,490) ÷ 35 = (8,500 − 5,490) ÷ 35 = 3,010 ÷ 35 = 86%.

Points as weights. A 50-point quiz at 90% and a 100-point test at 72%: (90 × 50 + 72 × 100) ÷ (50 + 100) = (4,500 + 7,200) ÷ 150 = 78%, a C+.

A target out of reach. 70% on work worth 60, with 40 still to come and a target of 90%: (90 × 100 − 70 × 60) ÷ 40 = (9,000 − 4,200) ÷ 40 = 120%, so extra credit is needed. The grade so far, 70%, is a C-.

A target already secured. 96% on work worth 80, with 20 still to come and a target of 70%: (70 × 100 − 96 × 80) ÷ 20 = (7,000 − 7,680) ÷ 20 = −34%. Even 0% on the rest gives (7,680 + 0) ÷ 100 = 76.8%, above 70%.

A letter boundary. One graded row at 92.99% is an A-, because an A starts at 93%.

Other questions people ask

How do I calculate my grade in a class?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights. With homework 92% worth 20%, quizzes 85% worth 20%, and a midterm 78% worth 25%: (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25) ÷ (20 + 20 + 25) = 5,490 ÷ 65 = 84.46%.

Do the weights have to add up to 100?

No. The average divides by the sum of the weights you entered, so weights of 20, 20, and 25 work the same as 4, 4, and 5. That is also why the grade so far only counts work that has a grade: work not graded yet does not pull the average down.

Can I use points instead of percent weights?

Yes. Enter the percent you scored as the grade and the points the assignment was worth as the weight. A 50-point quiz at 90% and a 100-point test at 72% give (90 × 50 + 72 × 100) ÷ 150 = 78%, the same as 117 points out of 150.

How do I find the grade I need on the final exam?

Enter the final exam as a row with its weight and no grade, then enter the grade you want. The calculator solves (want × total weight − points so far) ÷ weight of the rest. In the example above, with the final worth 35% and a target of 85%: (85 × 100 − 5,490) ÷ 35 = 86%.

What if the grade needed is above 100% or below 0%?

Above 100% means the grade you want cannot be reached without extra credit. Below 0% means you already have it: even a zero on the rest keeps you at or above the target.

Which letter grade scale does this use?

The scale published by Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY): A is 93 and up, A- is 90 to 92, B+ 87 to 89, B 83 to 86, B- 80 to 82, C+ 77 to 79, C 73 to 76, C- 70 to 72, D+ 67 to 69, D 63 to 66, D- 60 to 62, and F is 59 and below. Schools set their own cutoffs, so check your syllabus.
