How to calculate

Turns points earned out of points possible into a percent score and a letter grade, or finds the points needed for a percent.

Formula: score = 100 × points earned ÷ points possible

  • Fill in any two of points earned, points possible, and score; the calculator finds the third.
  • Points earned above points possible (extra credit) give a score above 100%, up to 200%.
  • Letter grades follow the Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY) scale: A 93 and up, A- 90 to below 93, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D+ 67, D 63, D- 60, F below 60.

How it works

score = 100 × points earned ÷ points possible

Fill in any two and the calculator finds the third:

  • points earned = score × points possible ÷ 100
  • points possible = 100 × points earned ÷ score

Points missed = points possible − points earned, or 0 when you earned all the points or more. Extra credit points = points earned − points possible, shown only when points earned are more than points possible.

The score gets a letter on the Tompkins Cortland Community College scale. A score belongs to a letter when it is at or above that letter's lower limit and below the next one's.

  • A: 93 and up
  • A-: 90 to below 93
  • B+: 87 to below 90
  • B: 83 to below 87
  • B-: 80 to below 83
  • C+: 77 to below 80
  • C: 73 to below 77
  • C-: 70 to below 73
  • D+: 67 to below 70
  • D: 63 to below 67
  • D-: 60 to below 63
  • F: below 60

Assumptions

  • Points possible are at least 0.01. A score is from 0% to 200%; a score of 0% cannot give the points possible, so that pair has no answer.
  • Points earned may be above points possible (extra credit).
  • Questions work the same as points when every question is worth one point.

Worked examples by hand

43 out of 50. 100 × 43 ÷ 50 = 86%, a B. Points missed: 50 − 43 = 7.

88 out of 120. 100 × 88 ÷ 120 = 73.33%, a C. Points missed: 32.

The points for 90% on an 80-point test. 90 × 80 ÷ 100 = 72 points. 90% is an A-. Points missed: 8.

The points possible from 45 points at 75%. 100 × 45 ÷ 75 = 60 points possible.

Extra credit. 105 out of 100 is 100 × 105 ÷ 100 = 105%, an A, with 0 points missed and 5 extra credit points.

Other questions people ask

How do I calculate a test score percentage?

Divide the points you earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. 43 out of 50 is 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%.

How many points do I need for a 90%?

Multiply the points possible by 90 and divide by 100. On an 80-point test, 90 × 80 ÷ 100 = 72 points. Enter the points possible and 90 as the score to get it.

What is 88 out of 120 as a percentage?

88 ÷ 120 × 100 = 73.33%, a C on this page's scale.

Can a score be above 100%?

Yes, with extra credit. 105 points out of 100 is 105%. The page accepts scores up to 200%. It shows 0 points missed and the extra points as extra credit points.

Which letter grade scale is used?

The Tompkins Cortland Community College (SUNY) scale: A 93 and up, A- 90 to 92, B+ 87 to 89, B 83 to 86, B- 80 to 82, C+ 77 to 79, C 73 to 76, C- 70 to 72, D+ 67 to 69, D 63 to 66, D- 60 to 62, F 59 and below. Your teacher or school may use other cutoffs.
