How to calculate
A word calculator that turns a character count into an estimated number of words, or words into characters, by the 5-character typing word or the 4.79-letter average English word.

How it works
Pick how long a word is, in characters, and call it k:
- Typing standard: k = 5. A word is 5 characters, spaces and punctuation included.
- Average English word: k = 5.79 when your character count includes spaces (4.79 letters plus the space after the word), or k = 4.79 when it does not.
Then:
- words = characters ÷ k
- characters = words × k
The answer rounds the estimate to a whole number, halves up ("About 173 words", "About 1,448 characters", "About 1 word" for exactly one), with a comma between thousands. The unrounded estimate is also shown with 2 decimals.
Rules
- Characters are a whole number from 0 to 10¹²; words are a number from 0 to 10¹².
- Counts are exact decimals, so an estimate of exactly 1,447.5 rounds up to 1,448.
- The space choice applies only to the average English word; the typing standard already counts spaces.
Worked examples by hand
1,000 characters, typing standard. 1,000 ÷ 5 = 200 words.
1,000 characters with spaces, average English. 1,000 ÷ 5.79 = 172.71, about 173 words.
2,400 characters without spaces, average English. 2,400 ÷ 4.79 = 501.04, about 501 words.
250 words to characters with spaces. 250 × 5.79 = 1,447.5, which rounds up to about 1,448 characters.

How many words is 1,000 characters?
About 200 words by the typing standard (1,000 ÷ 5), or about 173 by the average English word with spaces (1,000 ÷ 5.79). Short everyday words give more words; technical writing with long words gives fewer.
How do I convert characters to words?
Divide the character count by the characters in one word. Typing tests use 5 characters, spaces and punctuation included, so 2,500 characters is 500 words. For ordinary English, divide by 5.79 when your count includes spaces, or by 4.79 when it does not.
Why 4.79 letters a word?
It is the average length of English words as they are used, from Peter Norvig's count of 743 billion words in Google Books. Each word is followed by a space, so a count with spaces has about 5.79 characters a word.

Is this a word counter?
No. It estimates from a character count you already have, such as a form's character limit. To know the exact number of words in a text, count them with a word processor.
