How to calculate

Computes the value of one pip for a forex position in your account currency, from the lot size, the pip size and the exchange rates you type, and the profit or loss for a move in pips.

Example with the default inputs (Lots 1, Lot size Standard (100,000 units), Pip size 0.0001, Account currency is The quote (second) currency, Move in pips (optional) 20): One pip on 100,000 units is worth 10 in your account currency.

Method: Pip value = lots × lot size × pip size (quote currency); ÷ the pair’s rate when the account is in the base currency; × the quote-to-account rate otherwise.

  • You type every rate; the page fetches no prices.
  • The pip value is exact from the typed decimals and rounded half up only for display: 4 decimals for the pip value, 2 for the profit or loss.
  • In a base-currency account the pip value uses the current rate; brokers may use the closing rate of the trade.

How it works

A pair BASE/QUOTE has a rate (price) P: units of QUOTE per 1 BASE. With L lots of S units each and a pip size p:

  • Units U = L × S (standard 100,000, mini 10,000, micro 1,000, nano 100)
  • Pip value in the quote currency = U × p
  • Pip value in the account currency:
    • account in the quote currency: U × p
    • account in the base currency: U × p ÷ P
    • account in a third currency: U × p × C, where C is the value of 1 unit of the quote currency in the account currency
  • Profit or loss = pip value in the account currency × pips moved (negative for a loss)

Every step is an exact fraction of the typed decimals. Only the shown results are rounded, half up (halves away from 0), from the exact value: the pip value to 4 decimals, the quote-currency pip value to 6 and the profit or loss to 2. So 1.005 shows as 1.01, not 1.00.

Rules

  • Lots from 0.001 to 100,000; the pip size from 0.000001 to 100; rates from 0.000001 to 1,000,000; the move from −1,000,000 to 1,000,000 pips.
  • You type every rate. The page fetches no prices.

Output format. Numbers in the account currency with no currency sign, because the page does not know your currency. “In words” reads “One pip on 100,000 units is worth 10 in your account currency.” (units with up to 3 decimals and thousands separators; the pip value as rounded above).

Worked examples by hand

1 standard lot of EUR/USD, USD account, 20 pips. 100,000 × 0.0001 = 10 per pip; 20 × 10 = 200.

Wikipedia’s example. 500,000 units (5 lots) × 0.0001 = 50 per pip; 10 pips = 500.

1 standard lot of USD/JPY at 150.25, USD account, −15 pips. 100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 yen per pip; 1,000 ÷ 150.25 = 6.655574… → 6.6556; × −15 = −99.8336… → −99.83.

2 mini lots of EUR/GBP, USD account, GBP/USD 1.27, 35 pips. 20,000 × 0.0001 = £2; × 1.27 = 2.54; × 35 = 88.90.

2.01 nano lots, quote-currency account, 50 pips. 201 × 0.0001 = 0.0201; × 50 = 1.005 exactly → 1.01 (half up).

Other questions people ask

What is a pip in forex?

The usual smallest step of an exchange rate: 0.0001 for most currency pairs, and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. EUR/USD moving from 1.3000 to 1.3010 is a 10-pip move.

How do I calculate pip value?

Multiply the position size in units by the pip size: that is the pip value in the quote (second) currency. 1 standard lot of EUR/USD is 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10 per pip. Convert it if your account is in another currency.

How do I find the pip value when my account is in the base currency?

Divide the quote-currency pip value by the pair’s rate. For 1 standard lot of USD/JPY at 150.25 in a USD account: 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000, and ¥1,000 ÷ 150.25 = $6.6556 per pip.

What if my account currency is not in the pair?

Multiply the quote-currency pip value by the rate of the quote currency in your account currency. For 2 mini lots of EUR/GBP in a USD account with GBP/USD at 1.27: 20,000 × 0.0001 = £2, × 1.27 = $2.54 per pip.

How much is a pip worth on a mini or micro lot?

A mini lot is 10,000 units and a micro lot 1,000, so on a USD-quoted pair like EUR/USD a pip is worth $1 and $0.10. A standard lot (100,000 units) is $10 per pip.

How do I work out profit from pips?

Multiply the pip value by the number of pips the price moved in your favour. 20 pips on a standard lot of EUR/USD is 20 × $10 = $200; a move against you is a loss of the same size.
