How to calculate
Divides a home or space’s price by its area to give the price per square foot and per square metre, or finds the price from a price per square foot.
Example with the default inputs (Find Price per sq ft, Price $417,400.00, Area (square feet) 2,194): Price per square foot: $190.25 ($2,047.79 per square metre) for a total of $417,400.00.
Method: Price per square foot = price ÷ square feet; price per square metre = price ÷ (square feet × 0.09290304); total price = price per square foot × square feet.
- The area is the floor area you want to compare, measured the same way for every home you compare.
- The price is one figure for the whole space (sale price, cost to build, or rent for one period).

How it works
- Price per square foot = price ÷ area in square feet.
- Area in square metres = square feet × 0.09290304 (1 foot = 0.3048 metre exactly, so 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 square metre).
- Price per square metre = price ÷ area in square metres.
- Total price: the price you type, or, when you find the price, price per square foot × square feet.
Every step is an exact fraction of the decimals you type; dollar outputs round once, half up, to the cent, and the area in square metres to 2 decimals.
Assumptions
- The area is from 0.01 to 1,000,000,000 square feet. The price is from $0 to $1,000,000,000,000.
- The price and the area describe the same space, and you measure area the same way for each home you compare.
Worked examples by hand
The 2025 median new home (Census). 417,400 ÷ 2,194 = $190.25 per square foot (190.2461…).
A $300,000 home of 1,500 square feet. 300,000 ÷ 1,500 = $200 per square foot. Area 1,500 × 0.09290304 = 139.35 m² (139.35456), so 300,000 ÷ 139.35456 = $2,152.78 per square metre.
Price from $190 per square foot. 190 × 2,194 = $416,860.

How do I calculate price per square foot?
Divide the price by the floor area in square feet. A $300,000 home with 1,500 square feet costs 300,000 ÷ 1,500 = $200 per square foot.
How do I find a price from a price per square foot?
Multiply the price per square foot by the area. At $190 per square foot, 2,194 square feet costs 190 × 2,194 = $416,860. Choose Total price under Find.

Use the same measure for every home you compare, usually the finished living area. Listings may leave out garages, basements or porches, which changes the price per square foot.
Does a lower price per square foot mean a better deal?
Not always. Larger homes often cost less per square foot, and land, location, age and condition all change the price. Use it to compare similar homes, not as a value on its own.
