Where do I build my Nether portal?
Enter the coordinates where you stand to see where to build the matching portal in the other dimension.

Build the portal at: X 125, Y 64, Z -38. Converting Overworld to Nether from X 1,000, Z -300: build the portal at X 125, Y 64, Z -38.
How to calculate
Converts Minecraft coordinates between the Overworld and the Nether: X and Z divide by 8 going to the Nether and multiply by 8 coming back, and Y stays the same.
Example with the default inputs (Convert Overworld to Nether, X coordinate 1,000, Y coordinate 64, Z coordinate -300): Converting Overworld to Nether from X 1,000, Z -300: build the portal at X 125, Y 64, Z -38.
Method: Overworld to Nether: X ÷ 8 and Z ÷ 8; Nether to Overworld: X × 8 and Z × 8; Y is unchanged; block coordinates round down.
- Horizontal distances in the Nether are 1/8 of the Overworld’s (Java and Bedrock editions).
- Block coordinates are rounded down (floor), as the game does, so −37.5 becomes −38.
- The game links a portal to the nearest existing portal within a search range, so two portals close together may link to the same one.

- Convert Overworld to Nether, X coordinate 1,000, Y coordinate 64, Z coordinate -300 gives Exact X 125, Exact Z -37.5, Block X 125, Block Z -38, Build the portal at X 125, Y 64, Z -38.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 1000 ÷ 8 = 125; −300 ÷ 8 = −37.5, rounded down to −38
- Convert Nether to Overworld, X coordinate 100, Y coordinate 70, Z coordinate -20 gives Exact X 800, Exact Z -160, Build the portal at X 800, Y 70, Z -160.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 100 × 8 = 800; −20 × 8 = −160
- Convert Overworld to Nether, X coordinate 15, Z coordinate 7 gives Exact X 1.875, Block X 1, Block Z 0, Build the portal at X 1, Z 0.Source: hand calculation in content.mdx: 15 ÷ 8 = 1.875 → 1; 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875 → 0
How it works
Horizontal coordinates in the Nether are 1/8 of the Overworld’s. Height is not scaled.
| From | X and Z | Y |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld to Nether | divide by 8 | unchanged |
| Nether to Overworld | multiply by 8 | unchanged |
- The exact X and Z are shown as computed.
- The block X and Z round the exact values down to a whole number (floor): −37.5 becomes −38, and 1.875 becomes 1.
- Y is shown only when you enter it, and exactly as you entered it, not rounded: Y 64.5 is shown as 64.5. In the text it is written in the shortest decimal form of the number (
64.5,70,-12.25). X and Z in the text are the block coordinates. - The text reads
X <block X>, Y <Y>, Z <block Z>, orX <block X>, Z <block Z>without a Y. Block X and Z have thousands commas and a hyphen for negatives (X 125, Y 64, Z -38;X 3,750,000, Z -3,750,000). - Note, shown only when it applies (both notes can show, joined by a space):
- Nether to Overworld, when block X or block Z is more than 29,999,984 from 0: “This is outside the Overworld world border (29,999,984 blocks from 0), so you cannot build there.”
- Overworld to Nether, when a Y is entered and it is above 122 or below 5: “This height is in the Nether’s bedrock roof (Y 123 to 127) or floor (Y 0 to 4), or outside them; build between Y 5 and Y 122.”
X and Z may be from −30,000,000 to 30,000,000; Y from −64 to 320.
Assumptions
- The 8 : 1 scale holds in both Java and Bedrock editions.
- The game links a portal to the nearest existing portal within its search range (Java Edition: 128 blocks around the point in the Overworld, 16 in the Nether), so the linked portal may not be the one at the exact coordinates.
Worked examples by hand
Overworld X 1000, Y 64, Z −300 to the Nether. X = 1000 ÷ 8 = 125. Z = −300 ÷ 8 = −37.5, rounded down to −38. Y stays 64. Build at X 125, Y 64, Z −38.
Nether X 100, Y 70, Z −20 to the Overworld. X = 100 × 8 = 800, Z = −20 × 8 = −160, Y = 70.
Overworld X 15, Z 7 to the Nether (no Y). X = 15 ÷ 8 = 1.875, rounded down to 1. Z = 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875, rounded down to 0.
Other questions people ask
How do Nether coordinates work?
One block walked in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld, east–west (X) and north–south (Z). Height (Y) is not scaled. So Overworld X 1000, Z −300 is Nether X 125, Z −37.5.
How do I link two Nether portals?
Build the Overworld portal first. Divide its X and Z by 8 and build the Nether portal at those coordinates (rounded down), at a height the Nether allows. When you go through, the game looks for a portal near the matching point and links to the closest one.
Why is the result rounded down?
The game turns a position into a block by rounding down (floor). −37.5 rounds down to −38, not −37, and 1.875 rounds down to 1.
Why did my portal link to the wrong portal?
The game searches for an existing portal around the matching point: up to 128 blocks from it in the Overworld, and 16 blocks in the Nether in Java Edition. If two portals are closer together than that, both can link to the same one. Build each portal at its exact matching coordinates.
Does the Y coordinate change?
No. Heights are the same in both dimensions. The Nether’s usable height is lower, so a portal high up in the Overworld may need a portal built lower in the Nether.
