Damage multiplier: 2. A Water move on a Fire/Flying Pokémon does 2× damage.
How to calculate
Finds the damage multiplier of an attacking Pokémon type against a defender with one or two types, from the 18-type chart used since generation 6, with the defender’s weaknesses, resistances and immunities.
Example with the default inputs (Attacking move type Water, Defender’s first type Fire, Defender’s second type Flying): A Water move on a Fire/Flying Pokémon does 2× damage.
Method: multiplier = chart(attacking type, first type) × chart(attacking type, second type), with chart values 0, 0.5, 1 or 2.
- The type chart is the one used from generation 6 (Pokémon X and Y) onward, with 18 types including Fairy.
- Only types count: abilities (such as Levitate), held items, Tera types, weather and other battle effects are not included.
- Same-type attack bonus (STAB) is not a type matchup and is not included.
Worked examples
Each example is checked against the calculator on every build.
- Attacking move type Water, Defender’s first type Fire, Defender’s second type Flying gives Damage multiplier 2, Effectiveness Super effective (2×), Takes 4× from Rock, Takes 2× from Water, Electric, Takes ½× from Fire, Fighting, Steel, Fairy, Takes ¼× from Grass, Bug, Takes no damage from Ground.Source: Pokémon type chart, generation 6 onward (Pokémon Database, https://pokemondb.net/type, retrieved 2026-10-01): Water on Fire 2×, on Flying 1×
- Attacking move type Electric, Defender’s first type Water, Defender’s second type Flying gives Damage multiplier 4, Effectiveness Super effective (4×).Source: Pokémon type chart, generation 6 onward (Pokémon Database, https://pokemondb.net/type, retrieved 2026-10-01): Electric on Water 2×, on Flying 2×
- Attacking move type Ground, Defender’s first type Steel, Defender’s second type Flying gives Damage multiplier 0, Effectiveness No effect (0×).Source: Pokémon type chart, generation 6 onward (Pokémon Database, https://pokemondb.net/type, retrieved 2026-10-01): Ground on Steel 2×, on Flying 0×
- Attacking move type Dragon, Defender’s first type Fairy, Defender’s second type None gives Damage multiplier 0, Move is super effective on Dragon, Takes 2× from Poison, Steel, Takes no damage from Dragon.Source: Pokémon type chart, generation 6 onward (Pokémon Database, https://pokemondb.net/type, retrieved 2026-10-01): Fairy is immune to Dragon and weak to Poison and Steel
- Attacking move type Fire, Defender’s first type Water, Defender’s second type Rock gives Damage multiplier 0.25, Effectiveness Not very effective (0.25×).Source: Pokémon type chart, generation 6 onward (Pokémon Database, https://pokemondb.net/type, retrieved 2026-10-01): Fire on Water 0.5×, on Rock 0.5×
How it works
Every move has one type, and every Pokémon has one or two types. The chart gives a value for each pair of attacking type and defending type: 2 (double damage), 1 (normal), 0.5 (half), or 0 (no effect). For a defender with two types,
damage multiplier = chart(move type, first type) × chart(move type, second type)
so the result is 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 or 4. With "None" as the second type, the multiplier is the chart value for the first type.
What the calculator shows
- Damage multiplier: the number above, such as 2, 0.25 or 0.
- Defender: the defending types, such as Fire/Flying, or one type.
- Effectiveness: "Super effective (n×)" above 1, "Normal damage (1×)" at 1, "Not very effective (n×)" below 1 and above 0, and "No effect (0×)" at 0.
- Takes 4× from, 2× from, ½× from, ¼× from, no damage from: every attacking type with that multiplier on the defender, in chart order (Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel, Fairy), separated by commas, or "None".
- Move is super effective on: every single defending type the move’s type does 2× to, in chart order, or "None".
Rules
- Pick a type from each list. Picking the same type twice has no answer: a Pokémon’s two types are different, so pick None for a single-type Pokémon.
- Only types count. Abilities, items, Tera types, weather, STAB and critical hits are left out.
The type chart (generation 6 onward)
- Normal moves: double damage to none; half damage to Rock, Steel; no effect on Ghost.
- Fire moves: double damage to Grass, Ice, Bug, Steel; half damage to Fire, Water, Rock, Dragon; no effect on none.
- Water moves: double damage to Fire, Ground, Rock; half damage to Water, Grass, Dragon; no effect on none.
- Electric moves: double damage to Water, Flying; half damage to Electric, Grass, Dragon; no effect on Ground.
- Grass moves: double damage to Water, Ground, Rock; half damage to Fire, Grass, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon, Steel; no effect on none.
- Ice moves: double damage to Grass, Ground, Flying, Dragon; half damage to Fire, Water, Ice, Steel; no effect on none.
- Fighting moves: double damage to Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, Steel; half damage to Poison, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Fairy; no effect on Ghost.
- Poison moves: double damage to Grass, Fairy; half damage to Poison, Ground, Rock, Ghost; no effect on Steel.
- Ground moves: double damage to Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel; half damage to Grass, Bug; no effect on Flying.
- Flying moves: double damage to Grass, Fighting, Bug; half damage to Electric, Rock, Steel; no effect on none.
- Psychic moves: double damage to Fighting, Poison; half damage to Psychic, Steel; no effect on Dark.
- Bug moves: double damage to Grass, Psychic, Dark; half damage to Fire, Fighting, Poison, Flying, Ghost, Steel, Fairy; no effect on none.
- Rock moves: double damage to Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug; half damage to Fighting, Ground, Steel; no effect on none.
- Ghost moves: double damage to Psychic, Ghost; half damage to Dark; no effect on Normal.
- Dragon moves: double damage to Dragon; half damage to Steel; no effect on Fairy.
- Dark moves: double damage to Psychic, Ghost; half damage to Fighting, Dark, Fairy; no effect on none.
- Steel moves: double damage to Ice, Rock, Fairy; half damage to Fire, Water, Electric, Steel; no effect on none.
- Fairy moves: double damage to Fighting, Dragon, Dark; half damage to Fire, Poison, Steel; no effect on none.
Every pair not listed does normal damage (1×).
Worked examples by hand
Water move on a Fire/Flying Pokémon. Water does 2× to Fire and 1× to Flying: 2 × 1 = 2, super effective. The defender takes 4× from Rock (2 × 2), 2× from Water and Electric, ½× from Fire, Fighting, Steel and Fairy, ¼× from Grass and Bug, and nothing from Ground.
Electric move on a Water/Flying Pokémon. 2 × 2 = 4.
Ground move on a Steel/Flying Pokémon. 2 × 0 = 0: no effect, because Flying is immune to Ground.
Dragon move on a Fairy Pokémon. Fairy is immune to Dragon: 0. Fairy takes 2× from Poison and Steel. Dragon is super effective only on Dragon.
Fire move on a Water/Rock Pokémon. 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.25.
Other questions people ask
How do dual-type matchups work?
Multiply the chart value for each of the defender’s types. Electric does 2× to Water and 2× to Flying, so it does 2 × 2 = 4× to a Water/Flying Pokémon. Fire does 0.5× to Water and 0.5× to Rock, so 0.25× to a Water/Rock Pokémon.
What does super effective mean?
The move’s damage is multiplied by more than 1: 2× against one weak type, or 4× when both of the defender’s types are weak to it. Not very effective means 0.5× or 0.25×, and no effect means 0×.
Which type chart does the calculator use?
The 18-type chart used since generation 6 (Pokémon X and Y), which added the Fairy type and changed Steel so it no longer resists Ghost and Dark. Older games used other charts.
Can a type be immune to a move?
Yes. Normal and Fighting moves do not affect Ghost, Ghost does not affect Normal, Electric does not affect Ground, Ground does not affect Flying, Poison does not affect Steel, Psychic does not affect Dark, and Dragon does not affect Fairy. If either of the defender’s types is immune, the whole multiplier is 0.
What is Fairy weak to?
Fairy takes 2× damage from Poison and Steel moves, half damage from Fighting, Bug and Dark, and none from Dragon.
Does the calculator include abilities, items or STAB?
No. It gives the type multiplier only. Abilities such as Levitate, items, Tera types, weather and the same-type attack bonus (STAB) change damage on top of it.
What is a 4× weakness?
A type that both of the defender’s types are weak to. Rock moves do 4× to a Fire/Flying Pokémon, because Rock does 2× to Fire and 2× to Flying.
