Round to the nearest thousand?
Type a number. The round to the nearest thousand calculator gives the closest multiple of 1,000 and tells you which digit decided the answer.
- Rounded number
- 30,000
29,504 rounded to the nearest thousand is 30,000.
- Why
- The hundreds digit is 5, which is 5 or more, so the thousands digit goes up by 1.
- Number
- 29,504
Rounded number: 30,000. 29,504 rounded to the nearest thousand is 30,000.
How to calculate
Rounds any number to the nearest thousand in exact decimals, and says which digit decides.
Example with the default inputs (Number to round 29,504): 29,504 rounded to the nearest thousand is 30,000.
Method: Look at the hundreds digit: 5 or more rounds the size of the number up to the next thousand; less than 5 keeps the thousands digit. Every digit to the right is dropped.
- The number is taken as the decimal it is written as, so an exact halfway value is a true tie.
- Halves round away from zero (round half up on the size of the number): a negative number rounds like its size, with the minus sign kept.

How it works
This is the rounding calculator with its place fixed at thousands. Take the number as the decimal it is written as, and let n be its size without any minus sign.
- Rounded number = ⌊n ÷ 1,000 + ½⌋ × 1,000, with the minus sign put back. A number that rounds to 0 shows as 0, with no minus sign.
- Why says which way the hundreds digit, ⌊n ÷ 100⌋ mod 10, went. The exact text is either "The hundreds digit is d, which is 5 or more, so the thousands digit goes up by 1." or "The hundreds digit is d, which is less than 5, so the thousands digit stays."
- Number repeats the input with up to 20 decimals and thousands commas. A number too small to show in 20 decimals is shown in its plain form (1e-21), with a true minus sign when negative (−1e-21).
Rules
- The arithmetic is exact: the input is read as its shortest decimal, not as a binary float.
- Every number has an answer, including 0 and very large numbers.
- The rounded number shows with no decimal places.
Worked examples by hand
29,504. The hundreds digit is 5, so the 9 goes up by 1 and carries: 30,000.
1,234,567. The hundreds digit is 5, so the 4 goes up by 1: 1,235,000.
499. The hundreds digit is 4, so the thousands digit stays 0: 0.
500. The hundreds digit is 5, so the thousands digit goes up from 0 to 1: 1,000.
−1,500. The size 1,500 has a 5 in the hundreds place, so it rounds to 2,000: −2,000.
Other questions people ask
How do you round to the nearest thousand?
Look at the hundreds digit. If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the thousands digit. If it is less than 5, keep the thousands digit. Then replace every digit to the right with zeros. 29,504 has a 5 in the hundreds place, so it rounds to 30,000.
Which digit decides?
Only the hundreds digit. 3,499 rounds to 3,000 because its hundreds digit is 4. The 9s after it do not push the 4 up first.
What happens to numbers under 500?
They round to 0. 499 has a 4 in the hundreds place, and its thousands digit is 0, so it stays 0. 500 is exactly halfway and rounds up to 1,000.
What happens when the thousands digit is 9?
It carries. In 29,504 the 9 goes up by 1 to 10, so you write 0 and add 1 to the ten thousands digit. The answer is 30,000.
How do negative numbers round?
Round the size of the number and keep the minus sign. −1,500 rounds to −2,000, the same way 1,500 rounds to 2,000. So a half rounds away from zero.
Do decimals change the answer?
Decimals only matter through the digits to their left. 999.5 has a 9 in the hundreds place, so it rounds to 1,000.
