How to change percent to decimal?

Type a percent. The percent to decimal calculator divides it by 100 and shows the decimal with every digit, plus the working.

Your numbers

Decimal
0.625

62.5% ÷ 100 = 0.625.

How
62.5% ÷ 100 = 0.625

Decimal: 0.625. 62.5% ÷ 100 = 0.625.

How to calculate

Turns a percent into a decimal by dividing by 100, exactly as typed: 62.5% is 0.625 and 120% is 1.2.

Example with the default inputs (Percent 62.5%): 62.5% ÷ 100 = 0.625.

Method: decimal = percent ÷ 100: move the decimal point two places to the left and drop the % sign.

  • The percent is taken exactly as typed, so the decimal shows every digit with no rounding.
  • A percent above 100% gives a decimal above 1; a negative percent gives a negative decimal.

How it works

Percent means "per hundred", so

decimal = percent ÷ 100

Dividing by 100 moves the decimal point two places to the left; add zeros in front when the percent has fewer than two digits before the point.

Exact arithmetic. The percent is read exactly as typed (the shortest decimal that gives the stored number), so the decimal is exact and shows every digit. No rounding is done. A negative percent keeps its sign, shown with a true minus sign (−).

Range. The percent can be from −100,000,000,000,000% to 100,000,000,000,000%.

Output format. The headline is the decimal with every digit, no thousands separators. The "How" line reads <percent>% ÷ 100 = <decimal>.
