Method: deadline = start date ± the number of days, counting calendar days or only business days (not Saturday, Sunday, or a US federal holiday); a calendar-day deadline on a non-business day moves to the next business day
- The start date is day 0 and is not counted: 1 day after Monday is Tuesday.
- Business days are Monday to Friday, less the US federal holidays of 5 U.S.C. 6103 on their observed day (Saturday holidays on the Friday before, Sunday holidays on the Monday after) when holidays are skipped.
- Court rules, state holidays, and extra days off by executive order are not applied.
- The start date is today unless you change it; the page reads today’s date from your device when it loads.

How it works
The start date is day 0 and is not counted: 1 day after a Monday is the Tuesday. Dates from January 1, 1986 to December 31, 2400 are accepted, and the number of days is a whole number from 0 to 10,000.
A business day is a Monday to Friday that is not a US federal holiday on its observed day. With Skip US federal holidays off, every Monday to Friday is a business day. The holidays are those of 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year’s Day (January 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday of January), Washington’s Birthday (third Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Juneteenth (June 19, from 2021), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (first Monday of September), Columbus Day (second Monday of October), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November) and Christmas Day (December 25). A fixed-date holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after.
Calendar days. The deadline is the start date plus the number of days (minus, for Before). With Move off weekends and holidays on (the default), a deadline that is not a business day moves one day at a time in the same direction (later for After, earlier for Before) until it is one; Moved from shows the day it moved from.
Business days. Starting from the start date, step one day at a time in the chosen direction and count only business days; the deadline is the business day where the count reaches the number of days. With 0 days the deadline is the start date. Days skipped = calendar days − the number of days: the weekend days and holidays passed over.
Calendar days (the result) = the days from the start date to the deadline, without a sign.
When holidays are skipped and the deadline would be before January 1, 1986, there is no answer, because the holiday data starts then.
The start date starts as today. The page was built on one day and may be opened on another: the built page shows the deadline for its build day, and your browser replaces it with yours as soon as the page loads.
Worked examples by hand
30 calendar days after September 30, 2026. October has 31 days, so September 30 + 30 days is Friday, October 30, 2026, a business day, so it does not move.
31 calendar days after September 30, 2026. Day 31 is Saturday, October 31. It moves to the next business day: Sunday is skipped, so the deadline is Monday, November 2, 2026, 33 calendar days after the start.
10 business days after Friday, December 18, 2026. Counting Monday to Friday: December 21, 22, 23, 24 (1 to 4), Friday, December 25 is Christmas Day (skipped), December 28, 29, 30, 31 (5 to 8), Friday, January 1, 2027 is New Year’s Day (skipped), then January 4 and 5 (9 and 10). The deadline is Tuesday, January 5, 2027, 18 calendar days after the start, with 8 days skipped.
10 business days before Friday, July 10, 2026. Counting back: July 9, 8, 7, 6 (1 to 4), Friday, July 3 is the observed Independence Day (skipped), July 2, 1, June 30, 29 (5 to 8), June 26 (9), June 25 (10). The deadline is Thursday, June 25, 2026, 15 calendar days before; Juneteenth (Friday, June 19) is further back and does not matter.
14 calendar days before Saturday, July 18, 2026. Day 14 back is Saturday, July 4. Moving earlier, Friday, July 3 is the observed holiday, so the deadline is Thursday, July 2, 2026, 16 calendar days before the start.
Other questions people ask
How do I work out a deadline from a number of days?
Do not count the start date: day 1 is the day after it. Count forward the number of days, and the last day counted is the deadline. 30 calendar days after September 30, 2026 is October 30, 2026.
What is the difference between calendar days and business days?
Calendar days are every day of the week. Business days are Monday to Friday, less US federal holidays. 10 business days after Friday, December 18, 2026 skip two weekends, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and land on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, 18 calendar days later.
What if the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday?
With “Move off weekends and holidays” on, a calendar-day deadline on a Saturday, a Sunday or a federal holiday moves to the next business day. Many rules work this way; for example the federal tax code (IRC 7503) moves a last day on a weekend or legal holiday to the next day that is not one.
Can I count back from a date?
Yes. Pick “Before” to find a deadline before the start date, such as the last day to file 14 days before a hearing. A deadline counted back that falls on a weekend or holiday moves to the business day before it.
Does this follow court rules?
No. Court deadlines follow the court’s own rules on which days count, what happens when the clerk’s office is closed, and extra days for mailing. Use this page for a first estimate, and check a legal deadline against the rule that sets it.
Which holidays are skipped?
