What grade was I in that school year?

Type a birthday and a year. The calculator answers "what grade was I in that year?" for the fall and the spring of that year, and lists every school year from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Grade by school year

How to calculate

Finds what grade you (or a child) were in, or will be in, during any year from a birthday and the kindergarten cutoff date, with a year-by-year list from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Example with the default inputs (Birthday March 15, 2000, Year 2,010, Cutoff month September, Cutoff day 1, Years held back or skipped 0): In the fall of the year: 5th grade (2010–11); in the spring: 4th grade (2009–10).

Method: Kindergarten starts in the fall of year K = birth year + 5 (cutoff in July to December) or + 4 (January to June), plus 1 if the birthday falls after the cutoff, plus any years held back. In the fall of year Y the grade is Y − K; in the spring of Y it is Y − 1 − K (0 is kindergarten).

  • US schools: kindergarten, then grades 1 to 12, one grade per school year; a school year starts in late summer or fall and ends in spring.
  • The cutoff is the state or district date by which a child must be 5; September 1 is the most common (NCES Table 5.3).

How it works

  1. Kindergarten year. A child starts kindergarten in the fall of the first school year in which they are 5 on or before the cutoff date. With the birthday in year B and the cutoff month M:

    • K = B + 5 if the cutoff is in July to December, or B + 4 if it is in January to June (the cutoff then falls in the next calendar year);
    • plus 1 if the birthday's month and day come after the cutoff's month and day (a birthday on the cutoff day itself is on time);
    • plus the years held back (or minus the grades skipped), from −3 to +3.

Kindergarten is the school year K–(K + 1).

  2. Fall of year Y. The school year Y–(Y + 1); the grade is g = Y − K.

  3. Spring of year Y. The school year (Y − 1)–Y; the grade is g = Y − 1 − K.

  4. Grade names. g = 0 is kindergarten; 1 to 12 are 1st to 12th grade; g < 0 is "not in school yet (kindergarten starts fall K)"; g > 12 is "out of high school (class of K + 13)".

The cutoff day must exist in its month (February allows 29); otherwise there is no answer. The year can be from 1900 to 2200; birthdays from 1900 to 2100.

Output format. School years are written 2010–11. The fall and spring lines show the grade name, then the school year in parentheses: 5th grade (2010–11). The year-by-year list shows Kindergarten: K–(K+1) and then 1st grade to 12th grade, each with its school year.

Assumptions

  • US schools: kindergarten, then grades 1 to 12, one grade per school year.
  • The cutoff rule is the state's or district's; check your own state.

Worked examples by hand

Born March 15, 2000, September 1 cutoff, year 2010. K = 2000 + 5 = 2005 (March 15 is before September 1). Fall 2010: 2010 − 2005 = 5th grade (2010–11). Spring 2010: 4th grade (2009–10). Class of 2005 + 13 = 2018.

Born September 2, 2000. After the cutoff, so K = 2006. Fall 2010: 4th grade (2010–11); class of 2019.

Born December 20, 1995, January 1 cutoff, year 2014. K = 1995 + 4 + 1 = 2000 (December 20 is after January 1). Fall 2014: 14 > 12, out of high school (class of 2013); spring 2014 too.

Born June 1, 2019, held back a year, year 2022. K = 2019 + 5 + 1 = 2025. Fall 2022: not in school yet (kindergarten starts fall 2025).

Other questions people ask

What grade was I in, by birth year?

With the common September 1 cutoff, a child born from September 2 of one year to September 1 of the next starts kindergarten the fall they are 5. Born March 15, 2000: kindergarten in 2005–06, so 5th grade in the fall of 2010.

Why does the page give two grades for one year?

A school year spans two calendar years. In the spring of 2010 a child is finishing one grade (4th, in 2009–10), and in the fall of 2010 starting the next (5th, in 2010–11).

What is a kindergarten cutoff date?

The date by which a child must turn 5 to start kindergarten that fall. September 1 is the most common in the US; some states use August 1, October 1, or January 1, and some leave it to the district.

What if my birthday is right after the cutoff?

You start kindergarten a year later. Born September 2, 2000, with a September 1 cutoff, you turned 5 one day late, so kindergarten was in 2006–07 and you were in 4th grade in the fall of 2010.

What if I repeated or skipped a grade?

Enter the years held back (+1) or skipped (−1). Each year held back moves every later grade one school year later.

Does this work for future years?

Yes. Type a coming year to see what grade a child will be in, or before kindergarten, when they start.
